Toyota is well known for its efficient automobiles, but with news that 29 of their facilities have achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, the auto company stake their claim as a leader in green building. The most recent addition to Toyota’s LEED portfolio is the newly completed Kansas City Regional Technical Training Center, which achieved LEED Gold certification.

In a unique redevelopment of a mill compound, Venkataramanan Associates executed a high-tech environment for Nirlon IT Park in Mumbai, India. The architects took care to incorporate several Danish best practices to address flooding, a problem the city is prone to. As a result, a 250 meter long body of water runs through the site, forming the spine of the master plan with its elegant sweeping curve. Moreover, verdant terraces punctuate the mass of buildings offering a calming environment that is evocative of an older Mumbai. With highly sustainable and energy efficient buildings, when finished, the campus will be the first of this scale in India to achieve LEED certification.

After a $100 million green renovation that took more than two years, the Empire State Building has been awarded LEED Gold certification, making it the tallest building in the United States to be LEED certified. Everything from the windows to the bathroom fixtures to the heating and cooling system was upgraded, and eco-friendly practices and a new recycling program were incorporated into the building’s operations. The results are expected to reduce the building’s energy consumption by more than 38 percent and save $4.4 million in energy costs, proving that green buildings don’t have to be new buildings.

Although Harvard’s school color is officially crimson, it seems as though it really should be green. The USGBC announced this month that Harvard University has completed a major milestone, having achieved 50 LEED certified buildings. Over the last 10 years, Harvard University has been actively renovating their historic buildings and constructing new buildings, all while working to make them as sustainable as they can. Harvard’s achievement marks them as the first institute of higher learning to have so many buildings certified. What’s even more impressive though is that they have 40 more LEED projects on the board or under construction right now.

Central Saudi Arabia is a difficult, if not impossible, location in which to create a new sustainable development. Summer temperatures can reach 120 degrees Farenheit, annual rainfall rarely exceeds 4 inches and anyone designing there must account for unpredictable duststorms. Yet this is precisely where the King Abdullah Financial District, Henning Larsen Architect’s master-planned area for the city of Riyadh, is rising. This Danish firm set strict guidelines for all buildings in the district to ensure low levels of heat gain and energy use, as well as adherence to traditional design principles. Their Crystal Towers, with construction scheduled to reach a milestone in several weeks, exemplify the firm’s progressive sustainability code.
