Geotectura together with Axelrod-Grobman Architects and Chen Architects just broke ground on a futuristic new building for the Porter School of Environmental Studies that will be Israel’s first LEED Platinum project when it is complete. Situated on the campus of Tel Aviv University, PSES has big ambitions for green building in Israel. The EcoBuilding will feature a permeable facade that brings in plenty of natural light and ventilation while acting as a “cup” that captures one of the country’s most scarce commodities – water. The project also incorporates pages of sustainable design techniques including green roofs, constructed wetlands, and vertical gardens – read on for a look at the most exiting features!

Over the past several years, PNC Financial Services has upped the ante on green design in downtown Pittsburgh with the 2009 construction of Three PNC Plaza, a LEED-certified office building, and the addition of one of the world’s biggest green walls at One PNC Plaza. Now, the financial company is preparing to break ground on another office tower that architect Doug Gensler describes as “the world’s most environmentally friendly skyscraper.”

Habitat for Humanity’s Kent County Chapter has always been a leader in the field of affordable and sustainable housing and even built the nation’s first affordable LEED certified home under the LEED for Homes pilot project way back in 2006. Due the success of the first home, the chapter made a commitment in 2007 to make sure future families would live in homes built to a minimum LEED Silver Certification. Currently, they have surpassed the Silver level and have progressed to LEED Gold Certified Homes as their new standard house. It is estimated (based on their earliest LEED Homes) that annual savings costs for electric, water, and heating will be at least $1,000 per home per year. The extra money available every month eases the hard decision between heat and food for families who live close to the poverty line.

Frito-Lay and its parent company PepsiCo probably aren’t the first companies that come to mind when you think about green businesses, but with the unveiling of Frito-Lay’s new facility in Arizona, the company just took a big step towards bolstering its green cred. The Casa Grande plant is ‘near net zero,’ meaning that it will be mostly run on renewable energy sources, like solar power. Additionally, the facility will be water efficient, recycling and reusing most of its own water, and the plant will divert most of its waste from local landfills.

In May 2011, Grant MacEwan University announced the opening of its University Service Centre in Canada, the first phase of its Single Sustainable Campus initiative. Built to LEED Silver standards, the USC features natural lighting, low VOC materials, water conservation measures and a solar-reflective roof, among other sustainable actions. The building’s energy performance was also optimized to reduce consumption by an impressive 40%.

Although Harvard’s school color is officially crimson, it seems as though it really should be green. The USGBC announced this month that Harvard University has completed a major milestone, having achieved 50 LEED certified buildings. Over the last 10 years, Harvard University has been actively renovating their historic buildings and constructing new buildings, all while working to make them as sustainable as they can. Harvard’s achievement marks them as the first institute of higher learning to have so many buildings certified. What’s even more impressive though is that they have 40 more LEED projects on the board or under construction right now.
