The term ‘building science’ is used quite often now in sustainable building circles, but much of what we understand of it can be traced back to the work of Dr. Joe Lstiburek, founder of Building Science Corporation. He is anything but your typical engineer or scientist who spends time crunching numbers or hiding away in a lab. Lstiburek has spent most of his career out in the field, testing and examining what works and what doesn’t. Many of the building standards today — from building codes to ASHRE to testing methodology — have his finger prints all over them, and his tough love criticism of building design is undercut with his wry humor and, of course, an encyclopedic knowledge of building construction. Previously, LivingHomes had introduced the C6, an affordable three-bedroom home, but the company rolled out this smaller version for homeowners who want a smaller and more energy-efficient option. The sleek, two-bedroom, two-bathroom home is a good fit for smaller infill lots common in cities or for eco-conscious homeowners who want to save on construction and installation costs.

The 2012 International Green Construction Code was just announced this week by the International Code Council – and it intends to be the first holistic code based on environmentally positive design. Rather than focusing on a few tweaks like traditional codes, the IgCC 2012 looks at a project’s entire system performance and breaks down specific details for compliance. The Green Code’s intent is to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste, and improve health — goals that its development co-partner the USGBC has been holding up as a mantle for years.

As Apple’s social record undergoes continued scrutiny the company just released its 2012 environmental report, which unveils plans to build America’s largest end user-owned onsite solar array at its massive data center in Maiden, North Carolina. The building itself is the world’s only LEED Platinum certified data center, and the 100-acre, 20-megawatt solar farm will supply 42 million kWh of clean, renewable energy annually.

Geotectura together with Axelrod-Grobman Architects and Chen Architects just broke ground on a futuristic new building for the Porter School of Environmental Studies that will be Israel’s first LEED Platinum project when it is complete. Situated on the campus of Tel Aviv University, PSES has big ambitions for green building in Israel. The EcoBuilding will feature a permeable facade that brings in plenty of natural light and ventilation while acting as a “cup” that captures one of the country’s most scarce commodities – water. Over the past several years, PNC Financial Services has upped the ante on green design in downtown Pittsburgh with the 2009 construction of Three PNC Plaza, a LEED-certified office building, and the addition of one of the world’s biggest green walls at One PNC Plaza. Now, the financial company is preparing to break ground on another office tower that architect Doug Gensler describes as “the world’s most environmentally friendly skyscraper.”

Habitat for Humanity’s Kent County Chapter has always been a leader in the field of affordable and sustainable housing and even built the nation’s first affordable LEED certified home under the LEED for Homes pilot project way back in 2006. Due the success of the first home, the chapter made a commitment in 2007 to make sure future families would live in homes built to a minimum LEED Silver Certification. Currently, they have surpassed the Silver level and have progressed to LEED Gold Certified Homes as their new standard house. It is estimated (based on their earliest LEED Homes) that annual savings costs for electric, water, and heating will be at least $1,000 per home per year. The extra money available every month eases the hard decision between heat and food for families who live close to the poverty line.
