A new batch of Nathan Sawaya’s delightful LEGO sculptures recently popped up at New York City’s Openhouse Gallery and we stopped by to take a gander. Unlike some of Sawaya’s previous works, many of which have a bit of an outrageous quality to them, “IN PIECES” glorifies quieter, more mundane objects – a bucket, a cloud or a pair of flip flops – that we often take for granted. Sawaya’s LEGO creations take on an unexpected new flavor when paired with photographer Dean West’s haunting and slightly “off” photos featuring the sculptures. Take a look here.

Botanical artist Azuma Makoto’s latest masterpiece wasn’t crafted from branches and blooms, but instead from LEGOs! The artist has built a life-like bonsai from the popular children’s blocks. The tree leans in true bonsai fashion, and is rooted in a textured LEGO grass planter.

Tired of peeling labels off of your fruit? The Brazilian advertising agency AGE Isobar has found a solution with its cubic mold, which presses a brand’s label into the surface of pieces of fruit. The mold is now the base for a juice company’s marketing campaign, and the results resemble a love child between Carmen Miranda and a box of LEGOs.

Our friends over at Dwell partnered with Pacific Standard Time to search for the best architectural LEGO masterpiece for Dwell on Design, and they’ve just announced their five finalists in the competition. This year’s contestants were asked to recreate the classic California mid-century modern home, all in the classic toy bricks. Readers of Dwell voted to select the finalists, and a winner will be selected next month!

For over a decade, artist Sean Kenney has been recreating his hometown, New York City, using tens of thousands of LEGOs. From a detailed West Village street scene, complete with tiny food carts and taxi cabs, to a sprawling model of Times Square that features flashing lights and photo-snapping tourists, Kenney has captured the essence of life in the Big Apple through his fun LEGO creations. The “professional kid” has built dozens of impressive models, like a 13,000-LEGO Empire State Building, of many of NYC’s most famous buildings. Click through for a photo gallery of our favorites!

We’ve seen LEGO wizards create some pretty amazing projects lately by combining the iconic blocks with technology. One fourteen year old LEGO genius, Leon Overweel, has used his skills to construct his very own LEGO printer! Dubbed the LEGO Mindstorms NXT printer (or PriNXT), the machine uses three motors to control an attached pen, which draws objects and messages.

Looking for some inspiration to renovation their 1,500-square-foot New York City apartment for them and their 10-year-old son, Melissa Marks and Vicente Caride, called in I-Beam Design for help, and with the help of LEGO master Sean Kenney they came up with this radical, pixelated design scheme. Together, they built a new stair railing and wall out of 20,000 LEGO bricks, which took Kenney and his team about two weeks to complete. Click through to see the complete slideshow!

Whether or not you’re a LEGO geek, you have to admit that this is pretty incredible. LEGO pro Rod Gillies took the new Superman mini figure by LEGO and constructed a vintage TV set with big rabbit ears for him. But this is where it gets really cool: The TV set is actually animated! The scene behind Superman moves, showing the caped superhero soaring through a cityscape as puffy clouds whiz by. Click through to see a short video of Gillies’ creation.
