Torafu Architects designed a magical installation inspired by Yozakura, a traditional Japanese custom of enjoying flowering cherry blossoms during the night. Commissioned by Kaneka for last year’s edition of the Milano Saloni, the twinkling installation exposed OLED (organic light-emitting diode) display panels, gently floating within Kaneka’s dark space. Thousands of LEDs emitted a gentle yet robust light, reminding visitors of the cherry blossom petals that shine during spring nights.

Circuitry really is the new root system, no? Wires connecting us all over the planet. So it’s inspiring to envision the coming work of artist Bruce Munro: a field of glowing orbs growing up out of Longwood Gardens, connected by a series of fiber optic “roots.” Moreover, the orbs will contain tiny glowing fibers themselves, each glowing a different hue. Meinhardt’s “Hopscotch” installation, showcased at the Vivid Sydney light and music festival, had visitors hopping up and down to create their own LED light rainbows. The low-energy light installation was one of more than 40 projects by local and international artists that encouraged interaction from visitors.

Seeing the beauty in an abandoned house, Elogio de la Sombra and lighting designer Luisa Alvarez transformed its interior into a glowing installation. The piece, called Inhabitando, created a world of illuminated color throughout the house’s interior. The pair used recycled gels, lamps, furniture and film negatives to create the fantastical rainbow installation, and they immortalized it with color rich video.

Each autumn thousands of Starlings flock to the UK to spend the winter. This natural phenomena creates wonderfully fluctuating shapes known as murmurations, where the Starlings meet together before settling to roost. Designer Claire Potter wanted to highlight the importance of one roosting site – the iconic and skeletal West Pier – so her design team created a light installation featuring more than a hundred wind-powered LED lights. The LED array is mounted atop recycled plastic poles above an old timber boat. Claire’s ‘mini-murmuration’ represents a tiny snapshot of the real murmuration that occurs, while also highlighting the decline of the starlings – red LEDs were chosen as a reference to the “red listed” status of the starling on the RSPB Species of Conservation Concern List.

This past year, people walking through the pedestrian tunnel in Sandnes Sentrum, Norway, were faced with the unique opportunity to watch their shadows transform into a beautiful luminous art show. Constructed as part of the city’s European Capitol of Culture 2008 event, the Strømer, is an interactive LED display wall that weaves a wonderful mixture of art, energy-efficiency and play into the fabric of daily existence.
