<p><a href="http://www.liquidr.com/index.html">Liquid Robotics</a>, a Silicon Valley startup behind the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/liquid-robotics/">surfboard-sized robots known as Wave Gliders</a>, announced today that the Papa Mau robot completed a record-breaking 9,000 mile trip across the Pacific Ocean from California to Australia. During its more than 365 days at sea, the robot reportedly survived shark attacks, weathered gale-force storms and battled the East Australian Current. But the wave-powered robot it reached its destination, setting a new world record for the longest distance traveled by an autonomous vehicle.</p>

<p>A few days ago, we reported how the <a href="http://liquidr.com/">Wave Glider</a>—a self-propelled, solar and <a href="http://inhabitat.com/wave-hub-the-worlds-largest-wave-energy-site/">wave-powered</a> robot designed by <a href="http://inhabitat.com/wave-and-solar-powered-robot-receives-22-million-in-funding/liquidr.com">Liquid Robotics</a>—had been deployed to <a href="http://inhabitat.com/solar-powered-wave-glider-robot-deployed-to-track-great-white-sharks-in-the-pacific-ocean/">track great white sharks in the Pacific Ocean</a>. Now word has reached us that when Hurricane Isaac struck off the Gulf of Mexico, the Wave Glider was actually being tested by US scientists. As such, they took the opportunity to use the multi-purpose robot to gather storm data at sea level.</p>

<p>The <a href="http://liquidr.com/">Wave Glider</a>—a self-propelled, solar and <a href="http://inhabitat.com/wave-hub-the-worlds-largest-wave-energy-site/">wave-powered</a> robot designed by <a href="http://inhabitat.com/wave-and-solar-powered-robot-receives-22-million-in-funding/liquidr.com">Liquid Robotics</a>—has been deployed to track great white sharks in the Pacific Ocean. Stanford University scientists are hoping to understand why the great white shark population in an area near the Californian coast has been in decline over recent years. Last year, we reported how The Wave Glider had been <a href="http://inhabitat.com/wave-and-solar-powered-robot-receives-22-million-in-funding/">awarded $22 million in Series D financing</a> in order to serve as a platform for ocean observation, data collection, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. The Stanford team said that The Wave Glider will join &#8220;an arsenal of ocean-observing technologies&#8221; that will spy on the marine predators in real-time.</p>

<p>If you thought there could be nothing better than a world-record-setting wave-powered nautical robot, you were wrong. The PacX Wave Glider team of robots is all of those things &#8211; and they&#8217;re on a mission to save the oceans to boot! Built by<a href="http://liquidr.com/gallery/"> Liquid Robotics</a> the quartet of robots set out from San Francisco propelled forward by wave power and outfitted with gadgets fueled by the sun that are capable of measuring the health of the ocean and its inhabitants. The robots <a href="http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17367984">just landed in Hawaii</a> and their 3,200-nautical mile trip set a world record &#8211; but they&#8217;re not finished yet. The quartet will now split into two pairs, with one pair headed to Japan and the other to Australia.</p>
