Mini Moderns is known for their textiles and wallpaper, and they just added to their offerings by launching a line of environmentally responsible paint made from left-over unwanted paint. The range was developed in partnership with Newlife Paints, an award-winning eco paint manufacturer that specializes in reprocessing waste water-based paint to create premium grade emulsion paint. The product is rescued and then carefully mixed into a range of colors perfectly compliment Mini Moderns‘s existing products.

The Building Baskets exhibition during the London Design Festival showcased a two-year design collaboration between the Design and Business Schools at Kingston University and the Lupane Women’s Center – a basket weaving enterprise that uses craft to empower women. The students worked with 26 highly skilled craftswomen, who used the students’ projects as a starting point and were then given time and space in a workshop environment to explore their own ideas, creativity and identity. The resulting prototypes make up the exhibition.

Re-Imagine, a new line of brightly-colored refurbished chairs from London design studio Studiomama, is a project born out of questioning our resourcefulness and our attitudes towards waste. It builds on the Studiomama’s interest in re-using existing materials and resources, and speaks of our ability to see the potential in the overlooked and unloved. Re-Imagine encourages us to look again at the unloved furniture in our homes, streets and markets, and to make them new again. Studiomama displayed its new series of hacked chairs at 19 Greek Street Gallery House during the London Design Festival.

The One Piece of Lamp, by Korean designer Kiseung Lee of Studio Inbetween, was one of the outstanding eco-designs showcased at this year’s 100% Design International Pavilion. It is a multi-purpose interior lamp made from a single slice of aviation plywood panel (aka PVC, PET or carbon paper). Here the material is cut in such a way that makes it extendable and flexible. It is created without waste, and it is incredibly lightweight and can be flat-packed for low-emission transportation. Studio Inbetween is a design studio founded in 2010 by Kiseung Lee, which is currently operating in Helsinki, Finland. The agency aims to “discover new possibilities from geometric features with different perspectives and a wide spectrum of methods.”

The Wonderwater Café at Leila’s East-London Shop is a pop-up space designed to raise awareness around the water-footprint of what we eat and drink. Opened for this year’s London Design Festival, this small but busy eatery sells only a few simple yummy dishes. An idea by Jane Withers and Kari Korkman (both experts on responsibly sourced food), and developed with the help of Dr. Naho Mirumachi (a water expert form King’s College London), the Wonderwater Café is a lovely spot that informs and delights people all in one go.

Dubbed Masonite:Memoriam, the collection designed exclusively for Swedish brand Svenskt Tenn captures both the newness and the oldness of this material.

We spotted Klickity‘s Fig lamp when it was launched at 100% Design during the London Design Festival last week, and we were struck by this modern take on a tradition lantern. The colorful design packs flat for efficient transportation, and it’s made up of 15 pieces that clip together to attach to any pendant light fitting. Cashmere brand Oyuna worked with designer Peter Marigold to create an interpretation of the traditional Mongolian ger tent-house (or yurt) in an installation for the new exhibition space located at 4 Cromwell Place. The construction, fitted within a grand, double-fronted house opposite the V&A Museum, was part of renowned curator Jane Withers’ show for London’s Design Festival.

We spotted this gorgeous collection of DIY flat-pack lamps by the Danish company Vita at 100% Design during this year’s London Design Festival. Interchangeable “petals” made from polypropylene, polycarbonate and even goose feathers are easily assembled around inner illuminated frames, creating soft glowing lamps that mimic the overlapping scales natural forms like artichokes and pine cones. Vita promises that you can transform their box of parts into a lamp parts in just 10 to 20 minutes. See how it’s done after the jump!
