The Traces ‘Junk’ Shop at the London Design Festival is packed full of exciting designs to catch the eye. One showstopper, in a room full of them, is the Skeleton Lampshade by Donna Walker. With just a suggestion of a lampshade fashioned in colorful wire frame, the chandelier is a modern take on a classic shape.

Now in its seventh year, the Esthetica Showcase at the Spring 2013 London Fashion Week once again brought groundbreaking eco-fashion by green designers from around the world to the British Capital’s catwalks. The fashion exhibit was launched to provide a platform highlighting designers who work at the cutting-edge of sustainable, ecologically-responsible practices, and this season’s show certainly lived up to Esthetica’s goals. Organized in conjunction with the British Fashion Council and curated by Orsola de Castro and Filippo Ricci (founders of green label From Somewhere), Esthetica showcased the collections of 15 designers who variously explore the use of locally-sourced, upcycled and recycled materials, create ethically sourced jewelery and work within fair trade practices. Chair created by Dejana Kabiljo, a Vienna-based artist who likes to mix a little fetish into her artistic exploration of human behavior and politics. The chair looks like it offers about a thousand cup holders, by it’s really made from the springs of Yugoslavian military mattresses.

Passing through numerous exhibits at the London Design Festival this year, we found ourselves drawn to Justyna Piotrowicz’s beautiful Luminaire Lamps. Combining the old world technique of glass blowing with one of our favorite new world lighting alternatives, LEDs, the Luminaire is a series of lamps that resemble a family of milky creatures, creeping along the floors. Where the old meets the new, the Luminaire is a unique combination of unlikely materials that will give any room just the right amount of warm and inviting light.

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but we think that this fascinating staircase made out picture frames is priceless. Spotted at this year’s London Design Festival amidst a flurry of other hot new home furnishings, these colorful lamps by Orchard Studio have a stretchy surprise – they’re made with reclaimed rubber bands! One of the coolest parts of the enlightening design, besides the fact that it matches Orchard’s equally cheeky rubber band chairs, is that you can switch out the bands with your own, meaning you can change the color scheme to all blue, all red, all beige, etc. While the lamps shown here appear to be incandescents (very 2001), we really hope these are CFL compatible too.

We were completely charmed by these King Louis Tables we spotted at the Lab Craft Exhibition at this year’s London Design Festival. Harking back to the grand ol’days when the French monarch reigned supreme, designer Gareth Neal gives these pieces a modern day twist using 3D computer drawing and CNC processing to create a sturdy cardboard honeycomb structure for these tables. An eye-catching, tongue-in-cheek creation fusing the old with the new, the Louis makes the perfect addition to any modernist home looking for a bit of irony.

Food and furniture were the order of the day at the exhibitions in the Brompton Design District at this year's London Design Week. Food and furniture were the order of the day at the exhibitions in the Brompton Design District at this year’s London Design Week. Offering a wonderful array of delicious treats and a handful of delectable design products, Brompton didn’t fail to cook up a five-star feast for the eyes, which included an amazing mushroom installation at Super Natural complimented by FoodMarketo’s freshly brewed coffee themed work. But it wasn’t all about treats and eats, there was also more than a handful of green furniture pieces on show that caught our eye, including in the Craft Council’s ‘Chairs and Tables’ exhibition and the ‘13 Chairs’ show at Mint.
