Coca Cola commissioned eco artist Sarah Turner to create lighting and a massive recycled sculpture for their Hospitality Centre at the London 2012 Olympic games. Coca Cola commissioned eco artist Sarah Turner to create lighting and a massive recycled sculpture for their Hospitality Centre at the London 2012 Olympic games. At 2 meters wide the lights make quite a statement, and they were made using 190 plastic Coca Cola bottles each. There are 5 of the large lights in total, and each is made up of rings of the plastic bottles and a globe in the middle. The globe is Sarah’s Cola 30 design, which is made from 30 Coca Cola bottles hand cut and sculpted into decorative forms. The Cola 30 was the first light Sarah made from waste plastic bottles when she first started her work over 4 years ago.

Over 80,000 spectators leaving the men’s 100 meters final were met with War on Want‘s 65-foot-tall projection detailing the low wages, abysmal conditions, and physical and verbal abuse facing nearly 775,000 workers in 1,200 Adidas-contracted factories worldwide.

Fears about the impact of pollution on the performance of athletes in the upcoming London Olympics have heightened as government agencies appear poised to issue a smog alert for the British capital. In the lead up to what organizers have attempted to tout as the “greenest Olympics ever,” Clean Air London has cautioned that a combination of high temperatures, sunshine and increased traffic congestion could create a “perfect storm” of smog this weekend.

With less than a week to go until the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony on July 27th, excitement is building. Hundreds of workers are putting the finishing touches on the massive project that is the 2012 Summer Olympics, but as preparations continue so too do the green aspirations of London 2012. Will the Games live up to the pledge made all the way back in 2005 to create the greenest games ever? The project is huge; a far cry from putting a conservatory up in your garden, so how is it possible to stay green when caring for the environment is rarely seen as the easy option? Read on for a look at exactly how green the London 2012 Olympics will be, starting with the three main stadia. These include the 80,000 capacity Olympic Stadium, the Velodrome and the Aquatics Centre (there are also five additional separate arenas – take a look at the full map of the Olympic Park to really get an idea of its scope).

Our country’s Olympic uniforms may bear the letters ‘U.S.A.’, but they’ve actually been manufactured overseas in China. While many have been quick to shrug off the origins of the Ralph Lauren-designed wares, there is one man who is not so happy with the revelation. In an interview with ABC News, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told a reporters, “I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again. If they have to wear nothing but a symbol that says U.S.A. on it, painted by hand, that is what they should wear.”

Zaha Hadid was just awarded the title of “Dame” for her services in architecture. The honor and new title (officially Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire) were given as part of Queen Elizabeth II’s Birthday Jubilee celebration on Saturday, June 16th. Hadid, who is arguably the most notable female architect in the world, was also the first female recipient of the Pritzker Prize in 2004 and the winner of the Stirling Prize in 2010 and 2011. One of her most recent projects is the Aquatics Center in Olympic Park, which features a wave-shaped roof and sustainable construction strategies.
