‘Just Desserts’ is a colorful cluster of glass lights made from recycled dessert bowls. UK-based designer Jay Watson created this intriguing lighting array by stringing up traditional glass bowls sourced from flea markets and second-hand shops. The lamps are set to make their official debut at Interiors LDN this May in London.

Thames Water, the company that provides drinking water for the city of London, has unveiled a new long-term strategy that will recycle sewage to provide drinking water for the entire population. The strategy looks to address the challenges the city will face in the next 25 years as the population the company serves grows from 9 million to 10.4 million by 2040. This will increase demand by between 230 and 340 million liters per day, with about 80 per cent of this rise expected in London.

Every month London spends £1 million cleaning up its sewers, which are clogged with a greasy mass of cooking oils. Now Thames Water and the utility company 20C have unveiled plans to use the gooey mess to produce energy at what is said to be the world’s largest fat-fueled power station. According to The Guardian, the £200 million deal was financed by an iCON infrastructure-led group and it will cover a 20 year period. The project will provide energy for sewage works, a desalination plant , and (if there’s any energy leftover) the national grid.

Each year, the Serpentine Gallery in London’s Kensington Gardens invites an architect to design a temporary structure in the park. This year, 41-year-old Sou Fujimoto will become the youngest architect to accept one of the world’s most sought after commissions. The cloud-like structure of steel poles will stretch over 350 square meters of lawn and create a transparent terrain exploring the pastoral context of the landscape. Forming an irregular ring, the latticed poles will simultaneously protect visitors from the elements while allowing them to still enjoy the park.

This new house by Evolve Architecture is situated on a backland site of old allotments in Ealing, London. It was designed with a collection of pitched roofs rising towards the centre of the site and low at the boundaries. The L-shaped design offers views onto the garden and the house itself. The open plan kitchen is at a raised half story level with bedrooms below. The facade is clad in grey spruce echoing the timber fences around. The finished house is spacious with an intimate quality of an oasis within the city.

A new report from the European Environment Agency states that the effects of climate change are already evident in Europe – and the situation is only going to get worse. The report, titled Climate Change, Impacts and Vulnerabilities in Europe 2012, notes that the past 10 years have been the warmest ever on record, and with an increase in extreme weather, Europe should expect to be hit hard by the effects of climate change.

Whether at age eight or eighty, there is something endlessly fascinating about the beauty of a soap bubble. Jason Tozer captures the fleeting colors and swirls of suds in his series of high resolution photographs. The London-based artist used a Hasselblad camera with a 135mm lens along with a lighting technique that required a large dome to illuminate the surface of each bubble. Resembling oil slicks or the atmospheres of alien worlds, the photographs highlight a subject that is at once familiar and foreign.
