While it may seem that books are being quickly replaced by their E-tablet counterparts, there are still a handful of people out there keeping the art of print alive. Van Alen Books, specializing in both architecture and design, opened earlier this week, proclaiming the revival of the architectural bookstore. The project designed by LOT-EK was commissioned by the Van Alen Institute and uses recycled doors throughout the interior, creating shelf space, benches and even a staircase! Jump ahead for a peek into this eye-electrifying design, which is bound to become New York City’s next hot spot for design buffs and the architecturally acute.

In case you couldn’t get enough shipping container architecture today, LOT-EK recently unveiled plans for an art school built from eight shipping containers in Korea. Situated along the river’s edge, the APAP Open Art School in Anyang, Korea will serve as an art school and exhibition space along a popular pedestrian crossway and recreational area. Construction is set to be completed later this month.

In honor of the World Cup, Puma has set up shop at South Street Seaport in lower Manhattan with a shipping container installation designed by LOT-EK. Our friends at PSFK and SampleSaleShop.com both had a chance to get sneak peeks before it officially opened on Saturday. Puma City NY is composed of two shipping container retail shops, a soccer pitch for pick up games and the Puma Social Club in a nearby building.

When we first heard about Puma City, the tri-level, 11,000-square-foot retail store and event space made of 24 refurbished shipping containers, we were intrigued by the popular sportswear brand’s pre-fab initiative. The portable Puma Store, which was designed by our favorite shipping container architects LOT-EK, makes clever re-use of discarded shipping containers and has been traveling around the world as a spokes-structure for both Puma and prefabricated buildings. So when we heard that the lego-esque stack, which was recently named best retail store by Travel + Leisure, would be making a stop in nearby Boston, we had to go see it in action!

And with their Container Home Kit (CHK) project, they’re bringing shipping containers to the masses with a clever and easily-adaptable system for virtually every residential context. Lot-ek’s scalable system can accommodate anywhere from 640-2560 square feet, and comes fully equipped and ready to plop on-site with built-in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and fully insulated AND furnished. It’s fully-equipped conceptually as well, making practical use of the world’s surplus of ISO cargo containers while exploiting the inherent structural qualities of the containers themselves.

Move out of the way shipping containers… there’s a new kid on the block: airplane fuselages.

New York’s urban architect recyclers, LOT-EK, have recently designed a library in Guadalajara made entirely of refurbished airplane fuselages. Apparently when airplanes are put to rest, most of their parts are easily recycled. However, according to Noticias Arquitectura, the fuselages are the only parts that are rarely reused, because “the cost of its demolition exceeds the profit of aluminum resale.” Because of this, there are a ton of discarded fuselages strewn all over deserts of the western states. Boeing 727 and 737 are the best-selling commercial planes and therefore the most common fuselage types in these graveyards. The fuselages are sold completely stripped, and at a ridicously cheap price – lending themselves to a great building material.
