ScottishPower Renewables has announced plans to temporarily halt progress on the Tiree Wind Farm off the coast of Scotland. Designed as a 361 square kilometer site 5km off the coast of the most westerly island in the inner Hebrides of Scotland, the Argyll Array scheme could produce as much as 1800MW of wind energy that would power as many as 1,000,000 homes. But activists with the No Tiree Array campaign and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) warn that dolphins, killer whales and basking sharks populate the waters surrounding the proposed site and that various bird species could be harmed as well.

People aren’t the only ones getting a jolt from caffeine these days; in a new study published in Marine Pollution Bulletin, scientists found elevated concentrations of caffeine in the Pacific Ocean in areas off the coast of Oregon. With all those coffee drinkers in the Pacific Northwest, it should be no surprise that human waste containing caffeine would ultimately make its way through municipal water systems and out to sea – but how will the presence of caffeine in our oceans affect human health and natural ecosystems?

Thanks to films like Battleship, we all know that war games are a crucial part of the US Navy‘s defense strategy. They provide ships’ crews with the necessary training and expertise that they will need in future war scenarios. Often though, they involve sinking old vessels for practical target practice, and this has caused an uproar in the side of environmental groups for years. As the navy biennial Pacific training exercise (called RIMPAC) begins, protesters are campaigning against the sinking of three retired warships, saying that their destruction will cause serious environmental damage.
