Last year, we reported that Dutchman Johan Huibers built a life-size Noah’s Ark as a biblical attraction for the Netherlands. Now four Christians from Florida are taking a page out of his book by unveiling plans to build a similarly huge ark – but in this case they will create a floating menagerie dubbed the Hidden Ark! Their goal is “to help and preserve helpless animals as God taught us,” and the Hidden Ark will serve as a zoo and environmental education center for visitors both on-site and online.

For homebuilders, constructing a house that can withstand hurricane winds can be tricky, because the only way to run a test is to wait for a major storm to develop. Florida International University just changed all that with its Wall of Wind, a hurricane research facility with 12 massive fans that can brew up wind speeds of up to 157 m.p.h – the equivalent of a category 5 hurricane. Five years in the making, the $8-million facility is now up and running, and researchers hope that the lessons learned at the Wall of Wind can help prevent serious property loss the next time a major hurricane hits the southern US.

Thanks to firm Oppenheim Architecture + Design, Miami Dade College is getting an eye-popping new campus center poised for LEED certification. To be located on Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami, the building is an extruded quadrangle shape that, along with a striking glass and steel exoskeleton, maximizes natural ventilation and public spaces for the students to enjoy. In terms of clean energy generation, the center will have its own wind turbines and solar hot water collectors right on its roof!

A new high rise is going up in Miami’s design district, and its a lean, green, eco machine. A collaboration between Chad Oppenheim architecture + design, energy consultant Buro Happold, and structural engineer Ysreal Seinuk, the $40 million, 25-story, “COR” building will incorporate mixed-use residential and commercial space, integrating green technologies including wind turbines, photovoltaic panels, and solar hot water generation. The building’s exoskeleton is a hyper-efficient structure that provides thermal mass for insulation, shade for residents, and architectural elements such as terraces and armatures that support turbines.
