Artist Michael Jantzen has released designs for a solar-powered seed-sowing machine that would plant flowers in response to evidence of environmental destruction. Placed in various locations around the world, these structures would detect signs of pollution and automatically release small quantities of flower seeds onto the ground below. The result is a paradox: the more flowers blooming around one of the apparatuses, the worse the environmental degradation in the surrounding area.

The great river turbine is a conceptual design for a large (one hundred foot diameter) stainless steel water turbine developed to function as a tourist attraction and as a powerful electricity generator. The electricity is generated by the current of the river as it flows through the turbine rotating its twelve massive blades, which in turn activate a powerful generator. The stainless steel turbine is mounted on a specially designed, public access moored barge.

Designed as an interactive retreat, the Spiral Garden Pavilion is a peaceful solar-powered space for visitors to sit back, relax and enjoy their surroundings. The airy pavilion by Michael Jantzen would be constructed using sustainably sourced wooden panels, which are completely adaptable. These four curved sections can slot together so the entire pavilion can be open, closed, or somewhere in-between – perfect for a private nap or a sunny gathering.

Prolific and provocative eco-architect Michael Jantzen has come up with yet another fascinating building, this time inspired by the symbolic image of grape vines growing over a trellis. The Eco Wine Pavilion is designed for temperate climates and functions as a wine tasting and special events center while also doubling as a renewable energy generator and storage facility. Jantzen continues to intrigue us with his original approach to sustainable design, and now that he has incorporated alcohol, we could not be more pleased.
His monumental Wind Farm Celebration Center is designed to serve as a visitor center and is very appropriately powered by an awe-inspiring 1.5 MW wind turbine that sprouts up from the structure like a blooming flower.

Internationally acclaimed designer Michael Jantzen continues to wow us with his architectural and renewable energy wonders. His newest brainchild, the Sun Rays Pavilion, consists of 12 massive columns that rise out of the earth like giant crystals reaching for the sun. Appropriate, because the acutely slanted building relies on the sun’s rays alone for power. Jantzen has many other designs for renewable energy pavilions, like his Wind Shaped Kinetic Pavilion or his Solar Wind Pavilion. This latest design is outfitted with photovoltaic film to generate electricity in order to power the pavilion and sell any excess to the grid.

Sustainable design superstar Michael Jantzen thrills us again with the oh-so-adaptable R-House. Intended as a vacation home, it is constructed nearly entirely from Accoya, a new ‘species’ of sustainably-sourced wood designed for ultra-high performance and class 1 durability. Rotating walls slide around the exterior of the structure to keep sun and wind coming and going in all the right places. The house has both passive and prefab qualities and is built to be configured and assembled on-site. Photovoltaic cells and wind turbines will provide the house with all necessary energy, keeping it entirely off the power grid, and rainwater can be collected for washing and flushing.

Wouldn’t it be great to be able change the shape and position of the walls of your house to go along with your mood, or more practically, the weather? Michael Jantzen‘s transformable M-Velope® is just such a structure, offering an inspired approach to designing smaller and more usable spaces. The 230 sq foot flexible space can be rearranged into various positions by moving the slated wood panels on its steel frame. All homes really should have this capacity – to move, change and morph depending on our needs.

Michael Jantzen’s experimental designs are a fascinating amalgamation of art, architecture, and environmental sustainability. The visionary architect’s design for the Solar Wind Pavilion is no exception. Planned for the California State University at Fullerton, the Solar Wind Pavilion is an impressive integration of wind power generation, solar energy, and rainwater harvesting, all combined into a gathering place for students and faculty for special events, studies, relaxation and meditation.

Michael Jantzen’s work transcends modern design. A m-lange of space-age sculpture and tinker-toy experiment, Jantzen’s buildings and houses span a vast range of functions and architectural styles. Just about everything he’s done is worth a long look (and a childlike fantasy), but we’re most excited about his M-house, a modular house comprised of flexible parts that connect to a matrix of modular supports. Like a toy house, these parts can be disassembled and rearranged at will, allowing the home to adjust with changing needs.
