5.9 isn’t just any number; it’s the magnitude of the devastating earthquake that struck the Italian region of Emilia May 29, 2012. Italian company Budri was one of the companies affected by the quake, and they reacted to the event by creating a series of tables and other decor from their damaged archive of marbles and stones (including onyx, lapis lazuli, amethyst and mother of pearl). The series, aptly dubbed Earthquake 5.9, was recently presented at the 2013 Salone del Mobile.

Last week, students and alumni from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) furniture design department presented their latest designs at the Salone Satellite during the 2013 Milan Furniture Fair. SCAD was the only US university invited to participate in this year’s event, and students brought with them eight beautiful handmade crafts, each with their own modern twist. Also on show were a number of renderings featuring additional student works currently in progress. The city of Milan, Italy is synonymous with high fashion and modern design. Adorning the walls of the this year’s Milan Furniture Fair are Juan Soriano Blanco’s New Dimension Tiles. These modular all-natural cork units that can hold anything from a teacup to a potted plant. Elastic behind each button secures objects snugly to the wall, making home organization attractive. Each tile can be fastened to the wall in a variety of compositions, letting the designer create art installations, vertical gardens, or photo collages. A warm, neutral color, the cork is a novel way to add a little touch of nature a living space.

The Italians like to keep the design world on the edge of their seats—literally. The Sgabellissimo from Modoloco Design is a two-legged stool that becomes a small ladder when turned upside down. Teetering on the edge of dangerous, sitters need to engage some serious core muscles to remain upright. Using the Sgabellissimo as a ladder requires the balance of an acrobat, and one wonders if the piece’s designer was ever a fan of the circus.

During this year’s Milan Design Week Swedish furniture maker IKEA rolled out a bunch of bright-colored tables, chairs, and other pieces of furniture. But perhaps the most interesting product IKEA unveiled in Milan was found in a press kit. According to Gizmodo, at Milan’s Salone design show IKEA distributed a press kit that doubles as a digital camera made of cardboard (which will soon be released). The camera runs on a pair of AA batteries, and can reportedly hold up to 40 images on its built-in memory stick.

That flash of red whizzing by you in Italy now may not necessarily be a Ferrari sports car – it could be a new high-speed train inspired by the car company’s reputation for top performance. Ferrari’s president, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, has partnered with luxury goods company Tod’s and French rail firm SNCF to launch Nuovo Transporto Viaggiatori, a new private high speed rail network. What NVT bills as Europe’s most modern train, the Italo, will debut on April 28th as service begins between Milan and Naples.

Addressing a string of deadly kerosene lamp accidents in slums that have killed hundreds of people and left even more homeless, designer Alain Gilles created a safer alternative called the Nomad solar lamp that will be presented at Milan Design Week 2012. Featuring 12 energy-efficient LED lights, a 5-watt solar panel, and two lithium-ion batteries, the plastic lamp has a silicon crown and is designed specifically for people who do not have access to the national grid for electricity. It can be hung up, stood alone, or carried by a handle when on the go, and it was designed to be durable enough to withstand accidental abuse.
