“Abstraction” is a series of modular pendant lamps laser cut from recycled and recyclable materials and designed by Brandon Perhacs of Lichen and Perhacs Studio. In a clever and playful move, the designer made the leaves of the lamps interchangeable with one another. This allows for a wide variety of design possibilities as the different patterns, colors and materials within the series are mixed and matched. One of the finalists in our Bright Ideas Lighting Competition, the shades will be available by the end of the summer to be creatively separated and recombined.

CGARCHITECTES designed and built this stunning “Crossbox” house composed of four prefabricated containers in Brittany, France. The modern residence is clad in a low-maintenance material for a sleek finish, while the inside is simply furnished and bright. The top of the bottom box features a green roof at either end, which provides an extra planting region for the home. Meanwhile the overhang of the top box provides shade for a deck area and a mini car.

Designed by Cook + Fox, the concept for the home was to provide a space that is highly adaptable and flexible, making it incredibly efficient programmatically. Homes provide a family privacy, but can also be social and economic domains. The Live Work Home is designed to be replicated on any single-family lot, promoting investment at a scale that is more affordable with the existing market of the Near West Side.

Creating vertical gardens just got a whole lot easier thanks to these modular garden tiles by Spanish firm Ceracasa. Their Lifewall product, which we just saw over at Jetson Green, is a modular tile that can support a number of different plants and is drip irrigated for water efficiency. Since it’s modular, the designer has the ability to place these in whatever pattern they want, which could create some really fascinating designs. Lifewall tiles also interface with another Ceracasa product called Bionictile, which is able to suck pollution out of the air.

Broisson Architects of Naucalpan, Mexico has a new design for a prefab and modular pod house – Shelter No 2. This three-story home is designed for any socio-economic level, and contains enough room sleeping space for 3, a kitchen, reading and living area and hydroponia area. Able to be constructed at a speedy pace and built from recycled materials, the architects think this home could be a model for affordable housing.
