Located in the city of Bhopal, the SunCarrier Omega Building is the first net-zero energy building in India. The building features sun-tracking solar photovoltaic generators integrated with large capacity energy storage and management systems. The solar systems generate and store enough energy to fulfill the building’s electrical and air-conditioning needs. The design also incorporated daylighting to maximize the use of natural lighting; LED lighting and occupancy monitoring sensors. The building is completely off the grid, and it consumes no fossil fuels.

Construction is officially underway on Foster + Partners‘ sustainable masterplan for the Hongqiao Vantone SunnyWorld Centre, a sustainable mixed-use development in the heart of the Shanghai Hongqiao Central Business District. The 1.7 million-square-foot development will include include offices, restaurants and shops. The new development is centered around a 10-acre park, and it’s designed to maximize natural light and ventilation.

Architect Peña Ganchegui’s design takes an unusual approach to maximize daylight while lowering the home’s exposure to the elements. “Under the Same Roof” is an exciting new design for the Hong Kong Boundary Crossings Facility (HKBCF) that will be located on an artificial island in the Pearl River Delta in Hong Kong. Designed by Paul Mui Kui Chen, Benny Lee Chiu Ming, and Agnes Hung Oi Kee, the structure is a multi-story facility connecting bus terminals and roads with a sprawling roof covered in faceted panels that are semi-transparent to let natural daylight in, while an indoor winter garden serves as a meeting place and a spot to rest for weary travelers.

Later this month, Médiacité, a new shopping and entertainment center with some exciting green features will open up in the center of Liège, Belgium. Located nearby the new train station, Gare des Guillemins by Santiago Calatrava, Médiacité will help rehabilitate the central city economically and culturally. With sweeping lines, advanced materials and environmentally aware design and construction, the new shopping center is an exciting new urban infill project and will surely be a big hit.

A recent competition earlier in 2009 held by the city of Chungju in South Korea made a call for a memorial space in the city’s United Nations Peace Park. Coming in at 3rd place was London-based firm ACME with their dramatic hive-like design. Drawing from the very core of what the United Nations is, this building is comprised of individual cells combined together to form a cube structure, mirroring how the UN is made up of individual countries who come together to form one entity. ACME’s proposal also includes an idyllic green roof and plenty of natural daylight.

A few days ago we got word that the Herning Center of the Arts building, designed by Steven Holl, broke ground in Denmark. As with other projects by Holl, this building is a playful combination of light, shape and meaning that manages to work both as a museum and as an architectural showpiece.
