Earlier this month at Designtide Tokyo, local studio Nendo debuted Bottleware: a collection of beautifully crafted dishware that gives new life to recycled glass Coca-Cola bottles. The green-tinted bottles were originally developed for a returnable program that washed and refilled customer’s empty containers. Looking for a way to upcycle “returnables” taken out of circulation, Coca-Cola partnered with Nendo studio, which is known for its ability to created refined objects rich with sentiment.

Though we all love fresh air, it’s sometimes hard to find time to stop and breathe while running the daily rat race – and being confined to closed concrete office spaces doesn’t help! Nendo has designed a cute little air purifier to counter this issue that works using essential oils extracted from fir trees. The AirLeaf Mini, designed for Japanese company Mikuni, can be simply clipped on to the vent fins of fans and air conditioners, and it’s ready to go.

Tokyo-based Nendo has a lovely new collection of sculptural objects made from farming-net, an agricultural mesh ordinarily placed around fruit and vegetables to protect them from harm by wind and animals. Unveiled a few days ago, their ¨Farming-net Collection¨ consists of a series of modern bowls, plates and lights that seems to float in the air.

Awe-inspiring design may not grow on trees, but it sure can dress up walls! Last year, architecture and product design group Nendo Studio completed the renovation of this gorgeous Moss House private residence in the Ebisu area of Tokyo, Japan. Taking inspiration from the plant life that scales the walls lining the nearby Shibuya River, the Nendo designers used dried moss to cover the interior walls with vine-like patterns. This custom wall treatment has a vivid color, a rich textural quality, and gives the starck white corridors a sense that the are alive.

It’s no secret that needless waste and heaps of scraps are part of the equation in today’s textile and garment manufacturing process. Granted there are some amazing results in terms of cutting edge fashion and eye-catching furniture designs, but this often comes at a huge cost in terms of the throw-away elements. The Cabbage Chair by Japanese designers, Nendo, defies this trend by taking waste paper from the pleated fabric industry and turning it into an organic marvel. This gorgeous recycled textile waste chair was designed for the XXIst Century Man exhibition curated by Issey Miyake. It’s no coincidence (visually) that ‘Pleats Please‘ has found a new expression in this layered demonstration of waste as upcycled renewal.
