This week, the US Army dedicated the world’s largest low-concentration solar photovoltaic installation on its White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. The installation will generate 10 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity and reduce carbon emissions by 7400 tons each year while saving the institution around $930,000 a year. “This project illustrates the U.S. Army’s commitment to going green, our focus on operating on net zero energy, and doing what we can to help protect the environment,” boasts Garrison Commander Col. Leo Puller.

Macro Micro Studio is a 50-square-meter (538-square-foot) live-work Passivhaus developed by the University of Dundee’s Macro Micro research unit at the Botanic Gardens in Dundee. The project will be the UK’s first fully net-zero energy live/work studio, and construction is set to run from January-May 2013. The design and technologies will be tested in a real-world situation over a period of four years in order to gain a better understanding of user behavior and technical performance.

Next month Method Homes will launch its brand new Paradigm series with the debut of a 722 square-foot modular home on the floor of the USGBC Greenbuild Conference and Expo in San Francisco. The prefab home, designed by New York City-based Bogue Trondowski Architects, is targeting LEED Platinum, it’s designed to have 6 of the 7 petals of the Living Building Challenge, and it features net-zero energy and water consumption.

Located in the city of Bhopal, the SunCarrier Omega Building is the first net-zero energy building in India. The building features sun-tracking solar photovoltaic generators integrated with large capacity energy storage and management systems. The solar systems generate and store enough energy to fulfill the building’s electrical and air-conditioning needs. The design also incorporated daylighting to maximize the use of natural lighting; LED lighting and occupancy monitoring sensors. The building is completely off the grid, and it consumes no fossil fuels.

PNC Bank has announced that it is building a bank branch that will produce more energy than it uses. Gary Saulson, the company’s director of corporate real estate, cites the new net-zero energy building as an example of the firm’s “commitment to innovation and energy efficiency.” The branch is expected to open in the first quarter of 2013 in Fort Lauderdale.

Big news out of the Big Apple: Cornell University announced last night that Thom Mayne of Morphosis Architects will design the first of three net-zero academic buildings on its new applied sciences campus on Roosevelt Island. Morphosis beat out six other finalists, including SOM, Diller Scofidio + Renfro, and Steven Holl Architects. Morphosis hasn’t unveiled the proposed design just yet, but there’s speculation that it will bear some similarity to the firm’s Cooper Union campus building in lower Manhattan. Initial drafts of the building are expected to be released to the public by November 2012.

That’s exactly what a Los Angeles-based startup is hoping to accomplish. OriginOil, a company that specializes in converting algae into fuel, is working on developing a pilot for an urban algae farm concept that would use wastewater to help grow algae, which is then used to generate energy, treating the wastewater in the process.

Frank Lloyd Wright‘s reverence for the natural world is well documented – the famed architect coined the term “organic architecture,” a style of building that blends in seamlessly with the natural world. But although his buildings did complement their surroundings, they still depended on many of the same energy inputs as other buildings. Now, more than 50 years after his death, the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation is planning to give Taliesin West — Wright’s winter home in Scottsdale, AZ — a net zero energy upgrade.

HOK’s San Francisco office received a jury recognition award for their net-zero “Battery Park” design, which features a remarkable algae facade. A combination of load reduction, waste heat recovery, and waste-to-energy strategies combined with an array of solar panels ensures that this densely populated mixed-use building can generate all of its own energy, while the building-integrated algae further slashes the program’s carbon footprint.

Frito-Lay and its parent company PepsiCo probably aren’t the first companies that come to mind when you think about green businesses, but with the unveiling of Frito-Lay’s new facility in Arizona, the company just took a big step towards bolstering its green cred. The Casa Grande plant is ‘near net zero,’ meaning that it will be mostly run on renewable energy sources, like solar power. Additionally, the facility will be water efficient, recycling and reusing most of its own water, and the plant will divert most of its waste from local landfills.
