This week, Nike announced that it will be partnering with Bluesign, the Swiss standard bearer for sustainable textiles. According to the apparel giant, the partnership will “accelerate the supply of sustainable materials and chemistries” for use in Nike products. The agreement will enable Nike’s global supply chain, which spans nearly 50 countries and more than 800 contracted factories, to access Bluesign’s key assessment tools and data at an “unprecedented scale and pace.”

Nike made history last week when it debuted the first-ever football cleat built using rapid-prototyping technology. Weighing just 5.6 ounces, the “Vapor Laser Talon” boasts a contoured three-dimensionally printed plate designed to provide optimal traction, as well as help football athletes maintain their “drive stance” longer and more effectively, according to the sportswear giant. And by using 3D-printing, Nike was able to produce design updates in a matter of hours rather than months.

New York-based artist Tom Sachs has teamed up with Nike on a capsule collection that combines Sach’s DIY ethos and his preoccupation with space exploration with the sportswear giant’s yen for performance innovation. Together, they’ve come up with a series of limited-edition sneakers, bags and jackets that are made using fabric from Mars Excursion Rover airbags, mainsails for boats, and even NASA spacesuits. The joint venture, dubbed NikeCraft, will launch on the eve of Sach’s Space Program: Mars installation at Manhattan’s Armory Park.

The community of San Pedro Apóstol in rural Mexico is set to benefit from a fantastic new sustainable sports center designed by the Portuguese office Blaanc Borderless Architecture in partnership with Mexico-based architects CaeiroCapurso. The proposal recently beat over 200 proposals from 61 countries to win $25,000 USD in funding from the GAMECHANGERS international competition. This sustainable social development demonstrates how architecture can bring communities together throughout the development process — it encourages locals to work together to build the sports center under a program they have titled “LEARNING BY BUILDING”.

Nike has just released its Environmental Apparel Design Tool to the public, with the aim of encouraging other clothing manufacturers to design more sustainably. The online app, which is based on Nike’s Considered Design Index, helps designers make real-time choices that shape the environmental impact of their wares. But it’s not a case of “do as I say, not as I do.” Nike used the tool to create its South Africa 2010 jerseys—the greenest and most technologically advanced kits in football history, according to the sportswear giant—from 100 percent recycled polyester, a move that diverted 13 million plastic bottles from the landfill.

ATTENTION GREEN SOCCER FANS

Nike recently unveiled its new team jerseys for the upcoming World Cup and here’s the kicker (pun intended) – they’re made from discarded plastic bottles! That’s right, the uniforms, or “kits” in proper soccer speak, are made from melted down bottles from landfills in Japan and Taiwan that have been spun into fabric. Typical “leather” footwear is nearly impossible to dispose of or recycle properly, is constructed using a combination of chromium-tanned leather and bonded, man-made materials and is usually manufactured in a developing country with substandard (or nonexistent) occupational health regulations. Cradle to Cradle authors and Inhabitat favorites William McDonough and Michael Braungart have even gone so far as to call mainstream footwear “hazardous waste” for the feet.
