Environmental activists may have counted plans for the Keystone XL being knocked down by the Senate as a major victory, but the fight’s not over yet. As open-pit oil sands mining continues in Canada, researchers from the University of Alberta have found that tar sands mining could cause even greater long term damage to the environment than previously thought as mining companies stand to massively and permanently deplete Canada’s natural peatlands.

Undeterred by Obama’s rejection of permit applications for the Keystone XL pipeline earlier this month, TransCanada have announced that they will move forward with the southern section of the controversial project. The Canadian firm is to start work on the $2.3 billion dollar, “Cushing MarketLink” phase of the pipeline, which would run from Cushing, OK, to the Gulf Coast refinery town of Port Arthur, TX. TransCanada will meanwhile refile permit applications to construct a second pipeline from the ecologically devastating Alberta Tar Sands across the U.S. border to Steele City, Nebraska.

The Obama Administration is expected to announce a rejection of a Canadian oil firm’s Keystone XL pipeline application. The Keystone XL pipeline has made headlines over the past year as environmentalists seek to influence Washington’s decision to allow the pipeline to be extended 2,000 miles from Alberta’s oil sands to the Gulf Coast. Republicans in the Senate have been pushing for a swift decision on the pipeline from the administration, in spite of hard evidence that it would seriously damage American ecosystems in its construction in operation. This latest move is sure to be seen as a triumph for those in opposition of the destructive plan.
