The greenest building is the one that’s already standing, and this week London officials announced that the buildings from the 2012 Olympic Village will be transformed into rental units, and many of them will be reserved for low-income housing. It has just been announced that the Olympic Village in London will be getting a face-lift to accommodate a new neighborhood, which London is calling the East Village. The East Village will have 2,818 brand new homes to be rented for this summer, and 1,379 of these homes will go to low-income Londoners. This is a great solution for London, since the city’s housing shortage was intensified by the global recession in 2007.

American Apparel CEO Dov Charney apparently misread his email. The Los Angeles-based apparel company will not be making official Olympic team uniforms for Russia, but has instead been asked to create “Russian-themed merchandise” for the event. Charney had originally told the New York Post, “It’s not just for the uniforms—it’s also the merchandise.” Charney shook off the misunderstanding. The American Apparel error comes shortly after Ralph Lauren was exposed for making American team uniforms in China, prompting 59 members from the U.S. House of Representatives to push for the Team USA Made in America Act to ensure all further uniforms are made in the U.S.

No, your eyes are not deceiving you – in one of the craziest recycled art installations we’ve ever seen, Czech artist David Cerny has turned a red London double-decker bus from the 1950s into a mechanical sculpture that can do push-ups for the kickoff of the 2012 London Games! To transform a traditional double-decker bus into this eye-popping sculpture with moving arms, Cerna started with a 1957 bus that he bought from a previous owner in the Netherlands. He then installed electric engines to power the large red arms attached to the front of the bus, which give the six-ton bus the ability to move up and down, simulating a push-up. In fact, having Team USA’s Olympic uniforms made in the US is one of the only thing Democrats and Republicans can agree on these days. This week, 59 members from the U.S. House of Representatives sent a letter to the U.S. Olympics Committee calling for future Team USA uniforms to be made in the United States. And on Monday, nine senators introduced the “Team U.S.A. Made in America Act of 2012,” which would prevent future uniforms from being made overseas.

The sheer size of the sporting industry has a massive effect on food, water and of course, building materials. Add overseas sporting events including the upcoming Summer Olympics in London, and the ecological and social issues grow even larger.

Our country’s Olympic uniforms may bear the letters ‘U.S.A.’, but they’ve actually been manufactured overseas in China. While many have been quick to shrug off the origins of the Ralph Lauren-designed wares, there is one man who is not so happy with the revelation. In an interview with ABC News, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) told a reporters, “I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again. If they have to wear nothing but a symbol that says U.S.A. on it, painted by hand, that is what they should wear.”

While we weren’t thrilled to hear that the 2012 London Olympics would be using PVC to build many of their temporary structures, the good news is that the materials will be recycled for another big sporting event afterwards. Over 142,000 sq. m. of PVC fabric was incorporated into the construction of the park and external Olympic venues, including Zaha Hadid’s Aquatics Centre, Hopkins Architects’ Velodrome, the Populous-designed Olympics Stadium and the Royal Artillery Barracks, but there is hope on the horizon because the developers of the Olympics have promised to do their part by recycling the vinyl after the games in new structures for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

Mayor Boris Johnson has come under fire for his office’s recommendation that municipal trucks spray saline solution along busy streets to reduce air pollution levels before the upcoming London Olympics. The “dust suppressants” behave like a glue, attracting dust particles to the ground so that they stick to roads instead of floating in the air. The process is used in 15 different sites across London, all of which, the director of a local non-profit points out, are close to government air quality monitoring stations. Simon Birkett, Director of Clean Air London, accused the Mayor’s office of spraying the suppressants before air readings are taken to monitor pollution levels.
