5.9 isn’t just any number; it’s the magnitude of the devastating earthquake that struck the Italian region of Emilia May 29, 2012. Italian company Budri was one of the companies affected by the quake, and they reacted to the event by creating a series of tables and other decor from their damaged archive of marbles and stones (including onyx, lapis lazuli, amethyst and mother of pearl). The series, aptly dubbed Earthquake 5.9, was recently presented at the 2013 Salone del Mobile.

The art of origami is serious business, especially when involves folding over 49,000 business cards as part of a three-dimensional representation of an enormously complex mathematical object. On September 20, USC Libraries unveiled an enormously intricate model of a newly discovered fractal called the Mosely Snowflake Sponge, designed by MIT-trained engineer Jeannine Mosely. At an enormous six feet tall, the thousands of cards making up the Sponge have been fashioned into cubes and paneled with USC’s red and gold school colors. This marks the first time that this object has been represented into the real world as an actual physical piece.

Finding a new Banksy piece is like opening a long-awaited birthday present, so you can imagine our delight when we got wind that the world’s most beloved graffiti artist might be trying his hand at origami stencils! Lonely Villein snapped these photographs of a crane with a goldfish in its mouth somewhere in the United Kingdom, and speculates that the urban artwork is a Banksy original. Is it is, then it’s definitely a departure from his usual style, and we absolutely love it!

Designer Luisa Robinson recently debuted a gorgeous set of Dragon Tail Lamps, which look both dangerous and delicate at the same time. The lamps are made with chromed origami paper and they taper to small curve at the bottom resembling a prickly tail, brining an edgy twist to the soft glow of light they emit. Based in the Philippines, Robinson integrates locally sourced organic materials into her designs including palms, seagrasses, bamboo, abaca, and rattan. The lamps are available in white and parchment and come in various suspension and table varieties, making them fantastic focal points for modern interiors.
