From Yuhang is a design collective based in China that applies local paper making techniques to furniture design. During this year’s Milan Design Week they unveiled their Gú Chair, which is molded from bamboo paper pulp. Made entirely from renewable fast-growing materials, the furnishing represents the fusion of traditional craft and contemporary design.

Although more expensive and less durable than their plastic counterparts, biodegradable cat litter boxes have some sustainable aspects that shouldn’t be ignored by feline owners. Designed by French Studio-aparte, the Ecolite recycles waste paper into a molded paper pulp litter box. And not only does the box take little energy to produce, it can also be broken down and flushed or composted at the end of its useful life!

Furniture maker Chris Palmer recently sent us photos of his Paper Pulp Series, a line of furniture made from a mixture of ground up organic waste. The organic-looking pieces – a table, two chairs and a lamp – are molded using paper pulp made out of local waste materials with local organic materials used as a binder. “With a firm belief in local economics, standard of living and remanufacturing along with my beliefs of new materials being good footing for interesting design work, the Pulp Series was created,” explains Palmer of the series.

By asking themselves how  to add a more human touch to objects in the age of mass production, Joon & Jung created these adorable recycled alarm clocks made from recycled paper pulp. Born in Korea and based in the Netherlands, Joonsoo Kim, Jungyou Choi and Hyunwook Lee designed black and white versions of possibly the most hated appliance known to man and replaced the nasty plastic for hand-made, paper pulp iterations. These ‘Paper Alarm Clocks’ will wake you up in a softer way ensuring you start your day in a happier and more sustainable manner.

At Inhabitat, we’re big fans of educational toys that masquerade as cute animals, and the piggy bank is one of the best examples of learning disguised as fun trick if we’ve ever seen one. But there is something about smashing a porcelain piggy bank to bits to get the money out that leaves us with a bad taste in our mouth, and we’re guessing designer Kiri Martin felt the same. That’s why we’re loving Bergdorf, Martin’s clever version of the piggy bank made of paper pulp, which can be ripped apart guiltlessly when enough money has been accumulated and then simply recycled.

When little hairy rodents enter our living spaces a unique tension arises; a mouse in a cage is a friend, whereas a mouse found sneaking around kitchen cabinets is considered a pest. Fascinated by this contradiction, Dutch designer Roel de Boer created Mouse Mates, a DIY hanging object that welcomes the furry inhabitants with a structure to play and have fun. On show at this year’s Milan Furniture Fair at the This Way exhibit, this peculiar device reduces the distance between man and animal in a playful way.

At first glance, you wouldn’t expect this luminous lamp to be made from paper pulp — but lo and behold, the Strobilus has been designed for near 100% recyclability. A beautiful and organic form dreamt up by designer Jonathan Coles, the Strobilus utilizes a compact fluorescent bulb enclosed within an array of pinecone-inspired pieces of paper pulp. With its subtle color and smooth texture, the eco-friendly material reduces the cool glare of sometimes-frigid CFL lighting while emitting a soft glow that is ideal for any home.

It never ceases to surprise us that much of good, sustainable design is also deliciously fun. Take Debbie Wijskamp’s paperpulp cabinets, for instance. They are what their name implies: drawers and shelves made out of pureed paper mache. And while I want to write sophisticated sentences with phrases like ‘materials reuse’ and ‘resource conservation,’ I just can’t help thinking about how glorious it must be, in a third-grade sort of way, to mash paper into furniture. Wijskamp’s process validates these daydreams.
