Syntax Architekur recently transformed a narrow, south-facing lot in Holzbauweise, Austria into a daylit kindergarten that is a rich place for exploration. The project’s generous windows and inward-facing sections add connectivity, while the use of low-energy materials and energy-saving technologies minimizes the school’s carbon footprint.

The project’s southern orientation give the house a big bump up in efficiency, and the wonderful roof system and unique skin provide it with a rich personality. Richard Kroeker Design hit all the right notes with this unique home — its green profile, good looks and low stance serve to enhance the neighborhood surrounding it.

At Inhabitat, we’ve been showing our support for COP15 by telling our readers about the need to take action on climate change. Various Architects in Oslo, Norway has taken a different path and did what they do best – designing a concept for an ultra energy-efficient building that could help mitigate the world’s climate problems! The building features a variety of energy-saving measures including operable insulated shutters on the building’s facade, wind turbines, a green roof, and the use of local and sustainable building materials – sounds like a pretty fitting tribute to COP15 if you ask us.

Set against the rocky forms of the L’Ardévaz mountains, the Zufferey House both complements and contrasts its surroundings with a poised position that makes it appear like a rock teetering slightly off-balance or a box-y UFO about to take off. With a structural form that can certainly be considered an architectural novelty, the home — designed by Nunatak Sàrl Architectes — grabbed our attention when we noticed its incorporation of eco-friendly building techniques including a prefabricated wood frame and passive heating.
