Four Nigerian teen girls have wowed visitors to Maker Faire Africa by creating a generator that is powered with pee. Using a resource that everyone has, the girls developed a generator that produces six hour of power for one liter of urine. At only 14 and 15 years old, the students are an inspiration for renewable energy developers everywhere and one can only imagine how useful a pee-powered energy generator would be in natural disasters or emergency situations.

We have run many stories in the past about urine being used as a power source, but this week scientists appear to have made a breakthrough discovery. A research team from Bristol have published the world’s first research paper on work that tests the viability of urine as a potential fuel for Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) that directly produce electricity.

Do you love the adventure of a road trip, but could do without the constant gas station pit stops to refuel and – ahem – release? Well, chemists have found a way to combine refueling your car and relieving yourself by creating a new catalyst that is able to extract hydrogen from urine. The process which was discovered by Gerardine Botte of Ohio University focuses in on a catalyst that would have a variety of applications, including fuel for hydrogen powered cars and cleaning up municipal waters.

Dutch designer Sam van Veluw has developed a new way to answer the call of nature at outdoor events and venues. After a long search for a public restroom at a music concert one evening, he came up with the concept of strapping a waterless urinal onto a tree. These would be simple to install and can relieve the pressure on porta-potties (we had to use the pun) at public events. Its practical application may be questionable, but it is a refreshing approach to what can be a pressing problem.
