Designed as an experiment in sustainability and a model for future programs, this LEED Platinum school commons in California has absolutely no solid walls. Located north of San Francisco in a residential community called Ross, the breezy 7,550 square facility designed by Turnbull Griffin Haesloop Architects is situated in the center of Branson School’s campus and is fronted by an enviable terrace and garden where students enjoy nature-centered outdoor learning.

A team of chemists at the University of California, Davis believe that the future of solar technology may lie in cells made from a film of tiny silver nitrate fractal trees. The research team, led by Professor Frank Osterloh, believes that by harnessing the conductive power of these fractal trees, they might create “better, more efficient solar cells” than the silicon-based photovoltaic panels currently available.

Inventor Terry Hope has created the Solarcross – a sun-powered electric bike outfitted with three photovoltaic panels, a 24-volt electric motor, and three 5,000 mAh lithium-ion batteries. The brilliant bicycle soaks up the sun’s rays as a source of clean electricity to propel it through the streets. All in all the kit weighs about 50 pounds and it can reach speeds of up to 50 kilometers per hour (31 mph) – and best of all, Hope says that any bike can be converted to run on solar power for about $300-$500!
