Tesla – the company that made electric vehicles sexy for the first time – just announced that they’re on track to get the first Model S sedans on the road next summer. While talking to Autoblog at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show, Tesla Motors vice president of communications, Ricardo Reyes, said that they are finishing up their final preparations to release the cars in the U.S. by the summer and to the rest of the world about six months after that. Tesla is offering an impressive range selection for the Model S — 160, 230 or 300 miles depending on the cash you shell out — and they’re planning to build a “supercharging network” that will charge their vehicles from 10% to 90% in just 45 minutes. In addition to opening up the roads to all-electric, zero-emissions long-distance road trips Tesla will be unveiling the look of their new Model X — a seven passenger crossover SUV — in February.

The Army has just received the first prototype of a plug-in hybrid electric armored vehicle at their U.S. Army Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) in Warren, Michigan. The vehicle, dubbed the FED Bravo, was developed by an outside company and is going to help the Army test fuel efficiency in military vehicles with possible widespread adoption in the future. It is the second in the line of fuel-efficient armored vehicles that the Army has tested — the first was the FED Alpha, a humvee that burns 70% less fuel.

The iconic DeLorean Motor Company has weathered a stormy past, but it’s coming back with a vengeance by introducing an electric version of it gull-winged masterpiece. The company just rolled out a prototype DMC-12 Ev at the DMC Texas Open House – and it’s a retro-future dream machine. While it doesn’t run on fusion power (yet) it still has some sweet performance statistics like a top speed of 125 mph driven by a 260 horsepower electric motor. Hang on tight, because the first production model is due out in 2013.

Although the Peugout BB1′s styling may be some of the funkiest design work we’ve seen, it’s causing quiet a stir in the Electric Vehicle world, and for good reason. The BB1 is part scooter, part car, and features two in-wheel electric motors and a solar panel equipped roof.

The Progressive Automotive X-Prize is heating up as the May 2010 start date approaches, and one of our favorite entrants is the eVARO, a three-wheeled plug-in hybrid from Future Vehicles Technology. The sleek electric vehicle can go from 0 to 60 MPH in 5 seconds and purportedly reaches 275 mpg under certain conditions. And for those times when there isn’t a gas station in site, the eVARO can cruise for up to 90 miles on pure battery power.
