The Koby Cottage was designed by Garrison Architects for a boarding school for troubled teens in order to allow families to visit with their children in a private, domestic setting surrounded by nature. The 1,100 square foot prefab cottage consists of two modules raised and separated for light, space and privacy. Koby is the first building constructed using the KFS (Kullman Frame System), an extremely strong and efficient modular space frame system consisting of hollow tubular steel and allowing large cantilevers and window openings.

Not only is this striking metal-sided house a beautiful example of prefab architecture — it was also designed not just for the people who reside there, but also for their animals! The owners of the home wanted a safe haven for their many animals that would protect them from local predators, so the home was designed with special areas just for pets. Located in the New Mexico desert on the Rio Chama, the Abiquiu House by Anderson Anderson Architecture also utilizes a number of energy and resource-efficient construction techniques.

At Inhabitat, we’re big fans of architects that take cues from nature, so we were stoked when we spied these bubbly, cocoon inspired homes over at ArchDaily. Designed by Cyril-Emmanuel Issanchou, the EC* Cocoon is a prefabricated, low-energy residence that is installed on walls made from locally gathered stones. Aside from the lofty design of the EC* Cocoon (who wouldn’t want to live in one of these curvaceous babies?), the home features a ton of eco-tech like solar panels, off-site wind turbines, and lush modular green roof panels.

Inhabitat favorite Marmol Radziner just officially launched a brand new line of affordable modular prefab homes, the Locomo (which stands for LOwer COst MOdular). The official announcement was made today at the Dwell on Design Conference in Los Angeles. Prices for a LOCOMO home top out at about $250 per square foot, but start as low as $200. That means for $200,000 to $700,000 depending on model and location, individuals and families have a great opportunity to live in a fabulous pre-fab home.

Perched upon a mountain a short drive away from Seattle, Washington, the Cantilever House combines a small-scale commercial steel frame with stunning modern styling. According to Anderson Anderson Architects the efficient construction was created through the union of two standardized, mass produced building elements — a prefabricated steel structural frame and a structural insulated panel system (SIPS) that encloses the entire building.

Their very first two story model, the new home includes all of the amenities and green finishes their other models do as well as Blu’s proprietary foldable prefab technology. Designed for single family homes, townhomes and development communities, the Evolution prefab home is yet another card in Blu Homes’ already well stacked deck.
