Frank Gehry is probably the most well-known living architect in the world and this week further established his legacy with $100,000 donation to the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc). Gehry, along with his wife Berta, has a longstanding relationship with the prestigious program, and the institute will use the money to initiate the Gehry Prize, an annual grant to be awarded to outstanding graduate students in architecture.

Today 2009 Pritzker Prize-winning architect Peter Zumthor unveiled his contemplative design for London’s annual Serpentine Pavilion exhibition. The 2011 Serpentine pavilion will be unique in that previous architects were required to have previously worked in England, and Zumthor is the first exception to this rule. The proposed offers a zen-like retreat for visitors, who will be guided by a series of pathways and staggered doorways towards an inner garden. Benches surrounding this chamber will offer a quiet space to sit and appreciate the open green space.

It is not often that an architecture master reinvents himself, but that is precisely what Pritzker Prize winning architect Frank Gehry has done. Gehry, who first won international recognition with his own residence, a masterpiece of post-modern architecture, has revealed what can only be described as the first post post-modern architectural work, the New Gehry Residence, completely confounding both his critics and promoters alike.

Da Rocha’s work is significant for his poetic use of an utterly simple material — concrete. In 60 years of practice, the architect has created high-rises, stadiums, houses, museums, and even a chapel from concrete.
