Bike commuting is a boon for urban environments – and soon, the bustling City of Pittsburgh, Penn., is about to have a lot more of it. The city’s Mayor Luke Ravenstahl recently announced plans to launch a 500-bike, 50-station bike sharing program in 2014. The initiative will build on the success of similar bike sharing programs in Washington, D.C., Boston, and Denver, and Mayor Ravenstahl hopes the new alternative transportation system will enhance mobility within the city, promote tourism, and provide a fun and healthy way to visit the city’s diverse and exciting neighborhoods.

In a bid to raise funds for a $10 billion transportation bill in Washington State, legislators want to impose a $25 tax on all bicycles that cost more than $500. When local business owners and Seattle Bike Blog contacted Washington Rep. Ed Orcutt (R), a member of the State Transportation Committee, to question the tax, Orcutt claimed that cyclists are contributing nothing to use the roads and because of their high heart and respiration rate, they produce greater carbon emissions than motorists.

Because of growing crowds flocking to NYC’s High Line Park, which are anticipated to double when the final section is complete, the architects and engineers have decided to add a people-mover style tram. The tram will keep the pedestrian traffic moving, getting people from one side of the High Line to the other more quickly. Last year, we covered the efforts of Stan Engelbrecht and Nic Grobler, who set out to turn stunning portraits of cyclists in South Africa into a spectacular book. It appears that their fundraising efforts on Kickstarter, and elsewhere, have paid off, and it is now possible to own one of several volumes from their Bicycle Portraits series. These books feature photos of South Africans and their bikes — depicting a population of people of all colors, sizes and walks of life. Each portrait is also paired with an individualized watercolor by South African artist Gabrielle Raaff, which shows the location of the bike and its owner.

China has made a momentous step forward for public transportation by unveiling the world’s largest bus – the Youngman JNP6250G. The megabus Superliner is 13 meters longer than regular city buses, and it can transport up to 300 passengers in a single trip. A fleet of the new buses will make up the Bus Rapid Transit service in both Beijing and Hangzhou, where populations are high and urban living creates great demand for public transportation systems.

Even though trains are considered more eco-friendly than a pile of people driving their own cars, let’s face it – they aren’t exactly the freshest green places to hang out. So Vittori Lab and a handful of other designers got together and designed the AirTrain, which uses NASA-patented technology to improve air quality using certain plants that absorb carbon dioxide emissions and release oxygen.
