The American Society of Landscape Architects just released an incredible useful and comprehensive database of 479 case studies of successful “green rainwater infrastructure” projects. It exemplifies various techniques of collecting rainwater and filtering it naturally before it flows into urban waterways as polluted runoff. Moreover, the study found that the use of green infrastructure is rarely cost-prohibitive. In fact, 75% of the projects in the database reduced development costs or had no impact on them.

Many villagers in rural India are in need of clean, safe toilet facilities and places to wash laundry. Seeking to provide a solution to this pressing need, the National Foundation for India asked New Dehli-based Vir.Mueller Architects to come up with a prototype for a public sanitation facility that could be built locally, emits no waste, and most importantly prevents groundwater contamination from the existing septic tank-based toilets. Vir.Mueller responded with the Delwara Community Toilets plan, which features composting toilets, captures rainwater, and serves a vital community space.

Castle in the Sky is a water tower concept for Latina, Italy that goes above and beyond just storing water for the city. Dreamed up by Atelier Ramdam Architects out of Paris, France, this heavenly design includes public garden space, a sky deck and an incredible mechanism that vaporizes water to create the tower’s very own rain!

This spiraling hollow structure is an exploration into a new prototype for a sustainable tower that may become a necessity if the planet heats up even more than it already is. Wrapped in a thin membrane of solar cells, the tower generates power for interior uses, while water is collected on the facade and then stored in a cistern underground. Not only is the tower’s appearance striking, it also combines residential, office, commercial, and growing space with renewable energy generation, water collection and a sophisticated cooling system.

The shores of Arrecife on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands will soon be graced by a beautiful new concert hall. Dutch architecture firm, Henning Larsen, took first place in a competition in 2009 to design the structure which will be called the Palacio de Congresos. Like a beautiful piece of jewelry, the concert hall is meant to accentuate the city’s sea promenade and elevate the city’s identity. Along with the striking form, the structure incorporates a number of sustainability initiatives like a “semi-intelligent” shading facade to keep the interior cool, solar panels for energy and hot water and rainwater collection.

With about 22 days to go until the start of the Shanghai World Expo, some of the amazing pavilions are already complete, while others are rushing to finish. The Shanghai Corporate Pavilion is almost done and here are the pictures to show its current status. We were really impressed last year when we learned that the pavilion would be constructed from recycled CD jewel cases transformed into thousands of polycarbonate tubes lit up with LED lights. And the results are looking phenomenal!
