HAPPY PARK(ing) DAY!

Keep your eyes open today for impromptu public parks popping up in parking spots around the world as hundreds of peeps take part in PARK(ing) Day! Wow, that was a tongue-twister if we ever heard one. This annual event, started by San Francisco art collective REBAR, is meant to encourage creativity, civic engagement, and interaction and is open to anyone who wants to set up their own park. The Inhabitat Team will be out and about in San Francisco and New York today checking out these pop-up parks and joining in on the fray. We can’t wait to see barbecues, bands, and people hanging out and enjoying the last of the summer sun out on the streets. In case you’re just coming in on this, there’s still time. This Friday impromptu public parks will be springing up around the world for PARK(ing) Day 2009! Created by San Francisco art collective REBAR, this one-day celebration of public space encourages people in cities around the globe to transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks. From pavement-faring pirate ships to mobile meadows we’ve seen some incredible projects in the past, and we can’t wait to hit the streets again this September 18th. Anyone can participate, so if you’d like to set up your own park head on over to Parkingday.org to get the scoop.

New parks will be popping up all over the country today, thanks to Park(ing) Day, an annual event that turns paved parking spaces into temporary green gardens. The event was started in 2005 by ReBar, an art collective based in San Francisco, and is meant to challenge urbanites to think about what our public spaces would be like if they were designed for the pedestrian, rather than the car.

Last Friday was Park(ing) Day – the day where San Franciscans and sprawl-fighting citizens around the world reclaimed parking spots to turn them into green spaces! What started as a few grassy plots of sod occupying metered parking spots in San Francisco has blossomed into a world-wide event, and this year was a HUGE global success. In San Francisco alone, over 55 parking spaces were occupied by volunteers, government offices, and local businesses. While the parks were a nice divergence from the usual cars that occupy their space, the park that got the most attention was constantly on the move.

You may have seen this blogging around recently, since the indomitable Rebar collective staged a brilliant urban intervention in San Francisco last month by rolling out some sod and building a mini park in a metered parking space. My friend Gregory Kellett, who assisted in the production of Rebar’s video documentary, sent along a link to their trailer, which is now available for viewing at the Rebar website and shouldn’t be missed.

With many thanks to Matt Passmore and his Rebar brothers, we share with you some simple instructions on building your very own temporary urban park in a parking space. Just be sure you pay the meter. There’s no such thing as free rent…
