Artist Doris Salcedo thought-provoking art transforms reclaimed items of furniture into politically charged sculptural work. In 2003 she took over a derelict spot between two buildings in Istanbul, stacking 1,500 chairs on top of one another that towered over passers-by like a small building. The chairs were piled in disarray, the huge number of items serving as a memorial to the many faceless members of society whose lives, work and even disappearance goes by unnoticed.

After conducting a 4-year-long photography-based research project in Beirut called Inviting Surfaces, the designer was able to express people’s everyday creativity and problem solving through new, functional objects.

Shiver me (reclaimed) timbers! Shipwreck Furniture proves that one man’s trash is another man’s booty with its unique furniture crafted from salvaged boat wood. From the Cutlass Coffee Table to the Scurvy Bench to the Flotsam Side Table, their pieces retain the nautical charm of the open seas by openly showcasing the faded paint and weather-worn look of the wood instead of trying to hide it.

An abandoned bowling alley finds a second life in this beautiful series of furniture by LA-based designer/woodworker William Stranger. Crafted from reclaimed strips of wood salvaged from a local defunct Tava Lanes Bowling alley, the collection springs to life in a variety of forms including a series of wall hangings and a low coffee table.

While they’re every bit as functional as Uhuru’s previous products, the limited edition Stitched Table, Standard Chair and Metal Stoolen have a little added oomph that sets them apart.

At our recent Reclaiming Design event, we were thrilled to see such amazing work and general interest in the integration of reused and recycled materials in the design process. But super-kudos go out to Mr. Tom Dixon, who spoke at our Inhabitat-sponsored HauteGREEN event about his recently-debuted 2nd Cycle line of furniture that is literally bringing vintage modernist furniture back into a new market.
