At Inhabitat, we love when artists create symbolic works of art using recycled materials. Here, Asif Farooq constructs these incredibly precise gun replicas using only reused cardboard. The gun sculptures are detailed and exact, and provide a chilling representation of the controversial machine. Farooq creates the pieces with salvaged materials and uses the works as visual metaphors to explore issues such as mass production in the industry and gun violence. To see more of his work take a look at Primary Project.

We all know Burning Man is full of oddities, and the annual event draws thousands into the middle of an inhospitable desert to enjoy a week of delusional mayhem. It’s not uncommon to see giant moving sculptures and “art-cars” exhibiting all kinds of mechanical wizardry, yet none are quite so magical as this nomadic 19th-century structure called the Neverwas Haul. The vessel is equal parts locomotive, steamship, and Victorian house, roaming the desert freely. See a video of designer Shannon O’Hare explaining her work of art here.

Cambridge-based artist and contemporary furniture designer Ashley Baldwin-Smith from Ashwin Studio specializes in creating furniture from found objects, recycled engine parts and scrap metal. Baldwin-Smith recently completed the Tube Chair and the B Chair, a pair of sculptural chairs that are made entirely from steel tubes that are welded together. The chair is intended to function both as a sculpture and as a comfortable chair that can be used both inside and outside. Because of its success, Baldwin-Smith plans to make several more variations on this theme. Visit the Ashwin Art Studio website to see more of Baldwin-Smith’s work.

Ugandan artist Ruganzu Bruno Tusingwire looked around his city and saw all of the challenges that local children faced. Wanting to make a difference, Tusingwire set aside the wall art he typically produces and turned to working with a far less common medium: plastic bottles. Using recycled materials, Tusingwire created a mobile amusement park to serve the children of Kampala. The recycled amusement park concept won the first City 2.0 Award at the TEDxSummit and provides a place for children to learn new skills and have a safe place to play off of the streets.
