Nietzsche-influenced freethinker and artist Jozef Mrva sees his work as an experiment in ritualistic expression. His recycled cardboard masks take after animals and invite people to immerse themselves in new roles to create a primitive identity. Convinced that aesthetics without metaphysics is nonsense, this Czech creator encourages people to use design as a medium to express their will. Mrva‘s use of readily available cardboard also gives way to an image that is both rough and fragile, and allows for the masks to be disposed in a sustainable way.

Marta Crass created this incredibly realistic cardboard camera without the use of any precision machining tools (like laser cutters or plotters). Measuring 6.5” x 4.5”, the replica camera is modeled after a 1960s-era Nikon camera given to Crass by her grandfather. Although it doesn’t take pictures, the beautifully crafted camera showcases the potential of recycled cardboard – and it can be yours for $150.

Lightweight yet exceptionally strong, these Bee Hive Lamps are a series of luminaries inspired in the busy insects’ homes. Created by London-based designer Marc Krusin for Alpac Srl, they’ve been constructed by layering Re-board, a patented, recycled, rigid paperboard manufactured in Sweden. And despite having a hard shell, Krusin’s Bee Hive Lamps give off a warm and inviting glow. Recycled, compostable and brilliant, we originally spotted this sweet lamp hanging at Milan Design Week.

Zouk Architects made creative use of affordable and recycled materials to create an interesting space at minimal expense in their new open plan office, which was later called the “Paper tube” office. Rather than disposing of moving “waste”, Zouk repurposed the unwanted materials as an integral part of the design of their new premise.

Activist and sustainable designer Anna Garforth created a wonderful piece for the recent edition of Dutch Design Week. Dubbed ‘Wondering Territory’, the 3-D model illustrates the migration of a brown bear and the evolving urban landscapes that have spoiled its natural habitats. Fabbian Illuminazione SPA, one of the leading lighting manufacturers from Italy, recently teamed up with Studio Pamio Design and P-one to unveil a new line of ecological lamps made from recycled cardboard. The collection includes three distinctive floor lamps with square and rounded edges that can be used both inside and out. The impressive floor lamps are made from 100-percent recycled cardboard, which is fabricated to be as strong as wood.

While awaiting his final year of architecture school to start at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, Nathan Corning designed and built this recyclable cardboard fort for his girlfriend’s toddler. Several iterations were designed in Sketch Up, with the two modules (kitchen/bedroom) being no wider than a standard doorway for easy setup. The two modules can be combined via velcro strips along the perimeters of the connecting passageway, or split up if it’s deemed too big for one particular room. The design was a great success with her son and his cousins!

The Re-Ply reclining chair uses a patent-pending molding technique to shape four plys of cardboard into a strong comfortable shell. Not only does the re-ply use cardboard in a way never done before, its formal characteristics are unique for a reclining chair of any material. The chair has a very low environmental impact as well, because it is made primarily from upcycled cardboard, uses minimal hardware and can be completely recycled. The Re-Ply is planned for production and has just launched on Kickstarter.

The Pause chair is a rocking chaise lounge made from a cardboard structure covered with two felt mats. The felt cushions are attached to the chair with rope instead of screws or glue. Designed by Piquattropunto design studio, the Pause chaise lounge is completely recyclable and weighs in at about 150 kgs.

In the middle of the last century, design pioneers like Alvar Aalto and Charles and Ray Eames began experimenting with bent plywood. By laminating thin veneers of wood, they were able to make organic curved forms that conformed smoothly to the body. Inspired by these masters, Will Holman has been working with a similarly humble material – corrugated cardboard. When clamped into a mold and adhered with wheat paste, cardboard can also be molded into curved shapes. These ergonomic panels are light, cheap, and recycled from alley-salvaged moving boxes. Mounted to a plywood frame, the resultant chair is an exercise in economy, utility, honesty, and simplicity.

Exploring Designjunction at the London Festival this year, one of the designs that caught our eye was this beautiful and unusual lamp shades made of corrugated cardboard. Created by British designer Tabitha Bargh, the lamp is constructed using cardboard made from 85% recycled materials. While stunning in form, what really makes the piece stand out is the exciting lighting effect it creates through its entwined layers of the cardboard.

Wanting to make a unique and affordable iPhone skin, San Diego-based designer Robert Magno decided to work with what he already had: boxes. “I’ve been noticing that there are a lot of products that have packaging with great graphics,” Magno writes on his Kickstarter page. “This is a way to extend the life of the artwork on those boxes.” Magno hand-cuts the skins from actual boxes and applies a removable adhesive; and he says the skin still leaves plenty of clearance for the camera port and flash. Sure, they may look like ads for Hershey’s and Kellogg’s, but they’ll keep your phone from getting scratched!

The hanging lamp is made from carefully selected pieces of corrugated cardboard, which are then arranged by texture and color and glued together. The Armadillo lamp shade from New Zealand-based company Eco Effect is a flat-pack lamp shade made from recycled eco-board that is quick and easy to assemble. Armadillo means “little armored one” in Spanish — we like to think of our Armadillo lamp shades as a type of armor for your little lightbulb. Armadillos can also walk underwater (but this lamp cannot). The lamp shade is recyclable and low CO2 emissions were produced during its production.
