Bibliophiles are sure to get a kick out of BRC Designs‘ new “Spineless” chair, which is made up of the spines of hundreds of old books. Spotted at ICFF this past weekend, the literally literary seat has a color-blocked design that references Mondrian. The designer, Benjamin Rollins Caldwell, explained that he obtained many of the books for free at thrift shops and selected the spines that had the most titillating titles.

Since it was launched in 2007, New York-based furniture company CounterEvolution has carved out a unique niche, creating a line of innovative furniture from reclaimed wood from bowling lanes. The company’s latest table, the Manhattan, was designed to fit into the pint-size apartments that are found in big cities. The sleek table should enable New Yorkers dine in style, while also reducing their carbon footprint.

MDC Interiors‘ nature-inspired Living Table integrates a bonsai tree into the table as a design element. The table is made with concrete and incorporates a hand painted design, etching, and recycled wooden block legs. The table has a ground niche used to house and grow a bonsai tree. In the Japanese culture, bonsai trees represent the harmony between man, nature, and the soul whereas Buddhist monks associate bonsai as a symbol of honor and prestige. Combining natural elements with furniture is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also brings a sense of calm and tranquility to a room and allows us to appreciate and incorporate nature and the environment into everyday activities.

Recently, a beautiful pair of credenzas came into the life of artist Wholman. Battered, beaten, but with noble bones, the pieces were salvageable and the artist went to work repairing them. However, it was their the outdated colors, broken doors, and damaged tops that made them eyesores, so with a little scrap wood and a little love, the artist remodeled them with salvaged old-growth pine tops and doors made from shop offcuts. Now the low-slung office beauties can enjoy another few decades of use. Wholman also detailed the entire process at his Instructables site for others to get inspired and build a pair of their own!

German designer Angelika Hess is located in Rosenheim near the Alps, where many local sports enthusiasts enjoy rock climbing; this led her to ask: “What happens to all those climbing ropes after they’ve lived out their load-bearing lifecycle”? Rocker Lane Workshop is a new Irish company that produces hand crafted contemporary furniture made entirely from reclaimed maple floorboards. The workshop is the result of a collaboration between Seán Fogarty, a young architect with a passion for sustainable design and master craftsman Michael Heffernan, who has over 45 years of experience working with timber. The resulting pieces are clean, modern and reasonably priced.

This watery blue chair by Pawel Grunert is as refreshing as the liquid that was once contained in the plastic bottles it’s made from. Called the SIE43 Chair, the piece was constructed for the ‘Eco Trans Pop’ exhibition at the Colombari Gallery in Milan, Italy. Grunert created a stainless steel frame to which he affixed dozens of PET bottles to create the cascade of blue. Though the seat doesn’t look like the most comfortable one we’ve seen, it’s an attractive piece of eco art that calls attention to the versatility of recycled materials.

Designer Ivars Gansons has turned an old bed frame and a stack of bicycle inner tubes into a beautiful recycled street bench. Each section was inventively created with reused objects interwoven to form a comfy looking seat. The ends of the bench were taken from an antique children’s bed, and the middle section was a former chandelier stand. Gansons welded together each part, then created the meshed fabric out of inner tubes to cover the frame.

Furniture designer Logan Komorowski salvages old Chinese riverboats and reinvents them as beautiful pieces of furniture laden with history and meaning. Manoteca’s stunning tables are functional works of art, constructed entirely from abandoned wood doors. Each aged and worn door is reinvented and assembled along with other recycled objects and materials to create beautiful and original pieces. The Italy-based design company uses only natural paints, and the door’s former parts are re-integrated in different sections to create additions that open outwards to reveal storage pockets and more. Check out the Manoteca website to see more of their interesting designs.
