Canadian designer Tat Chao has transformed discarded glass into a heterogeneous collection of recycled BIPOLAR lamps. Each lamp is made from a pair of wine glasses or champagne flutes that have had their bases removed. The glassware is collected via donations or second-hand shops before it is meticulously handcrafted in Montreal, Canada.

Coca Cola commissioned eco artist Sarah Turner to create lighting and a massive recycled sculpture for their Hospitality Centre at the London 2012 Olympic games. At 2 meters wide the lights make quite a statement, and they were made using 190 plastic Coca Cola bottles each. There are 5 of the large lights in total, and each is made up of rings of the plastic bottles and a globe in the middle. The globe is Sarah’s Cola 30 design, which is made from 30 Coca Cola bottles hand cut and sculpted into decorative forms. The Cola 30 was the first light Sarah made from waste plastic bottles when she first started her work over 4 years ago.

Wellington, NZ-based artist Michelle Whale found a new use for old, outdated business cards with her beautiful Last Light Lamp. Created for Active Architecture ltd, the recycled lampshade is made from 230 business cards – and they can even be made to order from personal business cards or stock material. We recommend fitting it with an energy-efficient LED bulb to keep temperatures and power use low.

Toronto-based Castor has come up with a radiant idea for reusing hundreds of burnt out light bulbs. The design team collected an array of working and non-working lamps and bulbs (all trashed) and fixed them into the shape of a cloud. Called ‘The Invisible Chandelier’, each lighting fixture is unique and shines with a low-energy bulb located within.

UK-based designer Natalie Sampson created this spiraling pendant lamp by fanning velvet coat hangers into an elegant helical form. The lamp casts beautiful shadows upon nearby surfaces, and it can be easily outfitted with a low-energy LED or CFL bulb. Studio Re-Creation has designed a beautiful set of ‘Glass Lamps’ made from found recycled objects like glass, cutlery, stainless steel trays, and wire. The sparkling hand-made luminaires raise the issue of food and beverage over-consumption. Based in The Netherlands, Studio Re-Creation believes in re-shaping and preserving personal belongings to extend the life of the objects we consume.

Student designer Natalie Sampson recently sent us this photo of her repurposed Wire Whisk Lamp and we couldn’t be more impressed! “My direction in design is repurposing everyday readymade objects into something new by giving them a different function,” she explains. “This is a lamp I made using over 320 wire whisks.” Sampson is currently an Applied Art and Design major at the University for the Creative Arts and we’re glad to see that she’s actively “applying” her studies in real life!

At first glance, designer Enrique Romero’s PulpLamps look more like cocoon-esque sculptures than lighting fixtures. Made from 100% recycled newspapers, the lamps come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, and each one is completely unique. The oversized shades can be hung solo or grouped together to form makeshift chandeliers of varying grayscale shades.

Designers are constantly creating or making improvements on designs in order to help reduce others’ eco-footprints, but what happens when a designer studies their own usage and excess? The Funoos Lamp by designer Roohollah Merrikhpour is one result of a designer looking inwards instead of outwards for a change. Merrikhpour stripped 6 plastic covers and slide binders from research booklets full of old projects, and then applied the pieces to self-locking straps to create an easy to make, mix-n-match, DIY lamp shade.
