Canadian designer Tat Chao gives old, damaged and unwanted wine glasses a new life as energy-efficient LED lamps! Chao detaches the bases from wine glasses and champagne flutes and joins them to create his beautiful Bipolar Lamps, which look like floating icicles.

Most plastics can be endlessly recycled without losing their indestructibility. But instead of being reused, the majority of plastics will end up as one-time-use products, finding their end as pollutants on land or in our oceans. Save Our Soup is Dutch designer David Graas’ colorful, speckled collection of recycled plastic lamps that have been created with then intent of diverting plastics from the Pacific Garbage Patch, or “soup”.

‘Just Desserts’ is a colorful cluster of glass lights made from recycled dessert bowls. UK-based designer Jay Watson created this intriguing lighting array by stringing up traditional glass bowls sourced from flea markets and second-hand shops. The lamps are set to make their official debut at Interiors LDN this May in London.

Lamp Revival creates quirky recycled table lamps and hanging lights from salvaged and vintage lamps, electrical parts and pipe fittings. For the past 10 years, the company has been operating out of Rockland, Maine, creating unique lamps out of old, discarded materials. In one of their most impressive creations, the folks at Lamp Revival used pipe fittings and sheet metal to create a jacket and bow-tie for the Fred Astaire lamp, and they used two recycled Victorian glass shades to create a matching lamp that looks like Ginger Rogers striking a dynamic pose. DeGross Design & Innovation‘s UTREM LUX is a series of lamps made from reused glass bottles that had been discarded in their studio. Each one of the designs in the series is made individually by hand, boasting its own unique aesthetics. The series includes everything from planter-lamp hybrids to a desk lamp to a pendant. UTREM LUX will be launched at this year’s Designersblock  in Southbank Centre as a part of London Design Festival. You can also check out their quasi-instructional “making-of” video here!

Toronto-based Castor has come up with a radiant idea for reusing hundreds of burnt out light bulbs. The design team collected an array of working and non-working lamps and bulbs (all trashed) and fixed them into the shape of a cloud. Called ‘The Invisible Chandelier’, each lighting fixture is unique and shines with a low-energy bulb located within.

This cute candle lantern designed by Lucirmás is a stylish little addition that will bring a bit of charm to any situation. Made from the glass of a single Italian prosecco bottle and repurposed cork, the “Nino” is not only recycled, but a recyclable creation that can be ported around to create special moments anywhere you go. Created out of an estimated 95 percent reused items, each piece is a one off, completely unique lamp, sustainably crafted by using repurposed objects. The only new elements to each lamp are the low-voltage, high output LEDs.

Recently featured at Design Miami, the Stormy Weather lamp collection by LMNOQ is an experiment in frugality and sustainability. Made entirely from recycled tin vegetable cans collected from local eateries, the Stormy Weather collection addresses the challenge of producing a well-crafted, functional work out of materials that would have been thrown away. The collection includes a standing floor lamp and hanging lamp variations, and each is available as a limited numbered edition of 5.

Ben Parker’s Lorna table lamp is a quirky little light that caught our eye with its bright bold color and use of reclaimed materials. The task lamp brings a bit of flair to any room in need of a color kick, and it’s built from reclaimed piping so it breathes new life into a material that would have otherwise wound up in a trash pile. The Lorna is available in an array of cool colors, including black, white, apple green, cheeky pink, duck egg blue, pumpkin orange, or as shown above, in cherry red.

Ryan Frank has just launched a new line of contemporary, upcycled interior pieces at Barcelona Design Week. The A(dd)Y(our)O(wn) lighting range gives everyone the chance to be part designer and part manufacturer by cleverly asking users to integrate materials of their own into the design. Made from rebar and natural rubber, the lights are designed without lampshades to encourage the re-use and recycling of everyday objects from garden, house or street.

Designer Jurg Grassl has found a way to recycle our old magazines in an illuminating way. A finalist in our Bright Ideas Lighting Design Competition, Grassl’s lamp is a simple construction that uses the pages of colorful cast off periodicals and low-heat LED light bulbs to create a “stained-glass” lamp. Dubbed the Maglight, the lamp is a sturdy and safe tabletop piece that casts a colorful glow of distinct patterns and photographic imagery.

Made from 256 pencils, Jennifer Huang’s Scribble Pendant Lamp is as quirky as it is stunning. A charming alternative to a regular lamp, Huang’s designs are a decorative adaptation of the everyday light fixture. Inspired by her classroom surroundings at the Edgewood Elementary School, the sculptural lamp is composed of a multitude of the classic Ticonderoga Envriostil pencils. Casting a subtle light, the lamps provide an atmospheric glow by beaming light between the pencils. German designer Michael Wolke has created these grand sculptural Beute lamps by overlapping thin strips of old cardboard. Taking on a modern and clean form, the pendant lamps hang from the ceiling like the top half of a bee hive suspended in a room. And with an ambient downward glow, the fixtures are a beautiful and useful feature for a spacious room.

Gilles Eichenbaum has made an art out of recycling old kitchenware into incredible lighting. Giles is a true craftsman who repurposes everything from colanders to kettles to broken toasters to create illuminating masterpieces. His work originally manifested itself as a hobby he picked up while traveling the world, but it wasn’t until he began selling the pieces at local flea markets, where they were met with a fervent reception, did he know he was doing something really special. Today the artist works from a small studio in Paris, continuing to fashion remarkable lamps from forgotten objects.

Beauty is certainly in the eye of the beholder, and one of our favorite eco-design studios certainly has a knack for finding the unassuming charm in the most unlikely materials. Designed by Anzfer Farms, the 5 Gallon Floor Light flips over a simple used bucket and fuses it with painted fir 2×4′s dowels and a found locust tree trunk. What results is an incredible ambient piece that combines equal parts industrial urbanity and woodland romance to provide just the right amount of interior lighting.
