The Chilean designer gets his raw materials from local recycling company, Recycla, who donates the e-waste to him free of charge. A modern design with just the right bit of kitsch, they are yet another exciting sustainable product coming out of Latin America.

Coca-Cola recently teamed up with environmentally minded designer Wayne Hemingway to introduce an umbrella made from recycled plant-based PET bottles. Available just in time for fall, the umbrellas are a statement on the viability of the plant based plastic that the Coca-Cola Company introduced in 2009 (ironically for bottled water). The bottles are now rolling out en mass in England, and since they’re made from 22.5% plant material and another 25% recycled plastic they have a decidedly smaller environmental footprint. The ability to recycle the bottles into an umbrella is a great demonstration of how new products can be designed to have less impact from the beginning to the end of their lifecycle.

Researchers in Japan have developed a method for making radiation detection devices out of recycled PET bottles that cuts costs by 90% over currently used devices. The resource reusing, life-saving gadget was developed at Kyoto University by Hidehito Nakamura and his team and uses “Scintirex,” a plastic resin that glows when in contact with dangerous levels of radiation. The demand for radiation devices in Japan is high after the March 11th earthquake, tsunami and resulting nuclear disaster. The team hopes to have a final product by the end of September.

What do you do with a “severely impaired” body of water and an unsightly shoreline park that is riddled with invasive species?  Launch a series of luscious floating islands!  In an effort to improve water conditions and restore natural habitats, the American Society of Landscape Architects has designed a series of seven floating islands (aka floating treatment wetlands). The islands, which mimic native wetlands, are constructed from non-toxic, post-consumer recycled plastics and then injected with inert polyurethane foam (the kind of stuff found in Memory Foam mattresses) for buoyancy.

Israeli industrial design student Dror Peleg has designed a colorful concept that combines two of our favorite things: cycling and recycling. Peleg’s Frii bike strays far from the norm – not only in material use, but in production – it’s made from recycled plastic that has been melted and injection molded into a lightweight, durable and colorful bike born anew.

Designer Saran Yen’s new series of furniture takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to the battle of the classes. Using recycled plastic baskets and cast off chair legs, the installation “Cheap Ass Elites” combines the mass-produced with the glitzy. The series at first glance, painted with bright metallics, looks luxe, upon closer inspection we see the rather inexpensive reclaimed plastic materials used.

Samsung has announced that its new line of recyclable smart phones will feature an Android phone called the Replenish and a feature phone called Restore. The Replenish is an energy-efficient phone made of 34.6 percent post-consumer recycled plastics and is 82 percent recyclable itself, also claiming to use fewer environmentally sensitive materials such as PVC, brominated flame retardants, beryllium, and phthalates. A battery cover with solar cells on the back can be purchased as an accessory and the phone is packaged in recyclable materials that are printed with soy ink.
