This watery blue chair by Pawel Grunert is as refreshing as the liquid that was once contained in the plastic bottles it’s made from. Called the SIE43 Chair, the piece was constructed for the ‘Eco Trans Pop’ exhibition at the Colombari Gallery in Milan, Italy. Grunert created a stainless steel frame to which he affixed dozens of PET bottles to create the cascade of blue. Though the seat doesn’t look like the most comfortable one we’ve seen, it’s an attractive piece of eco art that calls attention to the versatility of recycled materials.

Industrial design lab GR recently launched a clever new product called the ‘Aqua Jar’ that transforms any plastic bottle into an easy-pour pitcher. Formed from biodegradable and recyclable plastic, the attachment perfectly fits the universal coil of any plastic bottle, creating an attractive and sturdy mount allowing for water to be served anywhere with ease. Available in orange, graphite and frost, the Aqua Jar for Balvi was launched as part of the ZOCO exhibit at last month’s Valencia Design Week. Now if only they could come up with something for the orange juice carton!

We inherently love design made from recycled materials – and we love it even more is when an unusual choice of recycled materials challenges our expectations and provokes interesting questions about the nature of disposable comsumption. Such is the case with Redstr Collective’s P.E.T Abuse collection: a line of fancy “chalices” made from recycled plastic water bottles. With just a simple slice and reconfiguring of an old plastic bottle, we get a medieval-style chalice that looks better suited to King Arthur’s round table than collecting dust in your recycling bin. These look fun for parties and a good DIY craft project for kids. Considering we all have plastic P.E.T bottles making the rounds through our recycling bins, why aren’t we all making plastic chalices on a daily basis? (I smell a How-to coming…)
