It was at the 2012 Republican National Convention, where Romney probably felt confident that his climate denying jokes would fall on friendly ears. Here’s what he said: “President Obama promised to slow the rise of the oceans and to heal the planet. My promise is to help you and your family.” How the attendees of the RNC slapped their knees in laughter at that one! Fast-forward a few months and the devastation of Hurricane Sandy has silenced the glee.

In the US, climate change has always faced an uphill battle. It was even been the butt of several jokes during the Republican National Convention due to the lack of support and belief that human activity is warming the planet. However, an article from Inside Climate News has reported that unlike elsewhere in the world where climate scientists are listened to, in the US they face ‘organized harassment’ including torrents of freedom of information requests, hate mail, and even death threats from skeptics. Meanwhile their global counterparts are able to work without fear.

Public bike sharing is one of our favorite solutions to cutting inner-city congestion while providing for carbon-free modes of transportation. Services such as Velib and Smartbike have proven to be a popular and effective way to reduce our reliance upon cars, so we were excited to hear that Freewheelin will be bringing 1000 bikes to this year’s Democratic and Republican Conventions!

I was one of many folks who toured the country in a veggie-fueled bus several years ago, when biodiesel was becoming more well-known. The concept of a fuel made from a waste product was so exciting that it produced Straight Vegetable Oil caravans that traveled the country, celebrating the new green fuel and the art of living sustainably. Times have changed a bit.

The issue of green living has become much more complex. How sustainable is a fuel if rainforest was cleared to plant its feedstock? How sustainable is an organic orange if it traveled 3,000 miles to get to you? I’m about to go on the road again, this time with a group seeking to address these issues: the Sustainable Living Roadshow. It’s an eco-carnival, a roadworthy green festival, a grown-up veggie caravan. The launch party is today, and it’s partnered with another great local-living organization: Victory Gardens 2008.
