Members of the indie band Bowerbirds have been trying their hand at sustainable design with this fantastic self-built studio project. Since 2007, Beth Tacular and Phil Moore have been constructing their very own cabin and music studio, using only salvaged materials and running it on solar power. The band recently found success raising money on Kickstarter, and they are well on their way to minting a new album within the green construction.

Stephen Shaheen creates intriguing designs from discarded remnants of onyx left over from industrial stone fabrication. No stranger to upcycling, Shaheen uses these upcycled materials to create spectacular sculptural furnishings that resemble illuminated stacks in the form of a pyramid. The designs vary depending on the scrap materials Shaheen uses. The inventive Eistla series is crafted from onyx, while his Lou P. chair feature is a work made from 22 layers of Italian botticino marble. But while the materials differ, the central idea of utilizing all the wonderful salvaged remains of beautiful stone blocks remains the same.

Artist Jesse Bromm uses salvaged materials to create amazing miniature landscapes that explore the relationship between humans and the environment. Broom works with a wide array of found objects ranging from glass containers to bones and shotgun shells, and he tops his pieces with miniature figures to show the small size of humans in relation to the larger natural world.

In the dead of winter, sunny days may seem like a distant, taunting memory. But London-based design studio Hendzel and Hunt has the solution: sustainable furniture that cleverly doubles as a tribute to sunshine-filled times past and present. Their custom 12 O’Clock Shadow cabinet, made from salvaged wood, is inspired by the beautiful light in their client’s room, and it permanently captures the shadows cast on a beautiful sunny afternoon.

Blake Chamberlain is the brains behind this fantastic project ‘Waste Not Want Not’, a vegetative grow wall created out of discarded materials. The concept takes plastic water bottles and wooden pallets salvaged from the installation’s abandoned site in Windsor, Ontario, and strategically scatters them throughout the space. With the aim of creating a powerful statement that demonstrates the value of adaptive reuse, Chamberlain meets his goal with a dynamic wall of growth emerging from scrap materials.

Concrete Mode is a Thailand-based company that creates incredibly sturdy totes, bags and pencil cases the discarded bags used to transport concrete. Concrete is the most consumed man-made material on earth and more than half of all the world’s concrete consumption occurs in Asia. Besides immense CO2 emissions, concrete consumption produces waste when transporting it via bags. Instead of these bags ending up in landfill, Concrete Mode’s founders believe these bags should be repurposed into useful, fun, and fashionable items. After a successful Kickstarter campaign earlier this year, they’ve been at work producing the bags and have even tested out a prototype umbrella from the salvaged fabric.

Artist Várnai Gyula has recycled 2,500 plastic bottles to create a larger-than-life armchair! The colossal construction was displayed last year in Park Galeria, a mall in Budapest. The site often exhibits public artworks in its atrium, and passersby could sit back and take it easy in the giant chair.
