When officials at Florida Polytechnic University realized that their existing campus could no longer support a burgeoning population, it made sense to commission world-renowned alumnus Santiago Calatrava to design a new one. Construction just broke ground in March on the the egg-shaped Innovation, Science, and Technology building, which will stand as the sole new campus until the entire plan is finalized. Renders of the master plan reveal a verdant oval campus split in half by a long body of water that looks a lot like Washington D.C.’s reflection pool. True to his penchant for bridges, Calatrava created a series of small pedestrian bridges linking either edge of the water.

Santiago Calatrava fans and locals who have been dying to see Calgary’s Peace Bridge come to life over the Bow River will be happy to know that the candy cane-colored helix structure’s inauguration will finally take place on Saturday, March 24th. Originally slated for completion in the Fall of 2010, the $24.5 million dollar project has been controversial since residents complained about the high expense. But now that it is complete, at least 1,500 cyclists and pedestrians are expected to use the magnificent, low-impact tubular bridge every day!

The Denver International Airport (DIA) is no longer getting the starchitect treatment. DIA officials received notice that noted Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and his firm will be pulling out of the project for the airport’s redesign. Kim Day of DIA received the news from Calatrava’s wife and business manager, Robertina, on Wednesday, September 7.

Internationally-renowned architect Santiago Calatrava has just unveiled his latest work — a sleek and sustainable “Museum of Tomorrow” planned for Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Situated upon the currently barren Pier Maua, the “sustainably-focused” museum is part of a massive urban revitalization project launched by the city in preparation for the 2016 Olympic games. The elegant cantilevered structure was modeled after the surrounding landscape, and it features a transforming facade that allows it to adapt to changing environmental conditions.

Chicago’s city skyline is about to be graced by a stunning new super-structure that will rise above its shore like a helical seashell. Designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the 2000 foot Chicago Spire will be the world’s second tallest building upon its completion in 2011. The halcyon monolith is beautiful example of biomimicry, taking cues from the spiraling structure of the nautilus. It’s an iconic spire with a timeless form that will take strong future-forward steps with a projected LEED gold rating.
