A recent graduate of Design Academy Eindhoven, Kinderen focused his graduation project on perfecting transportable eco furniture. The primary material is ReBoard, a high-strength paper board substrate that is durable, ultra-lightweight, and 100% recyclable. Each piece in the series folds flat, making them easy to transport to outdoor concerts, parks, and just about anywhere you please!

As budget airlines scramble for ways to squeeze more passengers into planes — some have proposed standing-room only tickets — an Italian design firm has what it thinks is a good compromise: a saddle-type seat that angles passengers’ legs beneath them so that rows can be 25 percent closer together. Designed by Christina Brown and Eastlake Studio, the Stylex Seating Neocon 2010 showroom is a study in using green materials to create stylish spaces. Honeycomb cardboard was used as a double-duty display case that shows off the chairs while functioning as pivoting space dividers. The showroom is currently seeking LEED certification.

Summertime is fun, but can be tiring — and all you need sometimes is to sit your tush down on some nice, comfy seating. And if you are like us, you want to be locating yourself on a nice bench or stool that is sustainably sourced and constructed. There is certainly no shortage of functional and eco-friendly furniture to be found out there, and this is what we noticed this week in the blog-o-sphere.

Notcot features a modular and biodegradable lounging chair made of plywood, and a stool made of chopsticks and steamer trays.

Core77 tells us about a hand-woven aluminum chair.

Re-nest is highlighting chairs made from recycled whiskey barrels.

We all know that food and water are basic human needs, but what about something as simple as a place to sit? Right now, there is a pressing need for nearly 2 billion basic, low-cost seating units for schools hospitals and houses in underdeveloped countries around the globe. In response to the shortage, students Alon Tal and Fabio Alvarez teamed up with Zilca, a company that specializes in recycled materials, to find a solution. First presented last September at design fair Habitat Valencia in Spain, their senior thesis, the Reverse Project, makes cushions from re-purposed car foam for seating that is easy on the eyes, earth, and the behind!
