Seen over at Arch Daily this morning, Germany and China’s captivating German-Chinese House for the Shanghai World expo is a study in bamboo. The two story art building is the only pavilion in the Expo to utilize the extremely renewable and fast growing material as a load-bearing structure. Designed by Markus Heinsdorff in collaboration with MUDI, the art pavilion is the crowning achievement in the two countries’ event series, “Germany and China – Moving Ahead Together.”

Continuing our coverage of the Shanghai World Expo, we come to the Japan Pavilion, officially nicknamed the ‘Purple Silkworm Island’. Designboom is on the scene in Shanghai and has captured some great images of strange-looking purple bubble. The lightweight structure is composed of a tubular metal support system covered in a purple membrane with integrated solar cells. In addition to its solar power generation capabilities, the pavilion features natural ventilation and innovative energy-efficient cooling technologies.

Drawing on classic French style, Jacques Ferrier Architectures designed the gorgeous French Pavilion for the Shanghai World Expo, which welcomes visitors inside a green-walled “Sensual City”. Dezeen recently showcased a set of photos of the recently completed pavilion, which is covered in a concrete trellis-like structure and decorated with manicured French gardens, a green roof, ponds, and water fountains. Guests will be able to see, hear, taste and smell France when they visit this beautiful pavilion.

With about 22 days to go until the start of the Shanghai World Expo, some of the amazing pavilions are already complete, while others are rushing to finish. The Shanghai Corporate Pavilion is almost done and here are the pictures to show its current status. We were really impressed last year when we learned that the pavilion would be constructed from recycled CD jewel cases transformed into thousands of polycarbonate tubes lit up with LED lights. And the results are looking phenomenal!

This incredible Sun Valley is one of a six giant funnel-shaped canopies that are currently springing up in Shanghai in preparation for the 2010 World Expo. When they are all completed they won’t just be a pretty sight – the towering LED-studded structures will also collect rain water and act as massive sun collectors that filter daylight to the causeway and levels below.
