High-end clothing store Aether Apparel just launched its first standalone retail shop in San Francisco – and it’s made from three recycled shipping containers stacked one atop another! The sophisticated building is the latest addition to PROXY, a temporary cargotecture development in Hayes Valley which already boasts a coffee shop, an ice-cream parlor and a Biergarten. Aether’s towering shipping container store was designed by architects Envelope A&D working in collaboration with Aether designer Thierry Gaugain, and it was fabricated by Chris French Metal.

A new project in Detroit will upcycle 93 shipping containers into a luxury multi-family home, aptly named The Power of Green Housing Development. Designed by Steven C. Flum, the sprawling development will span four floors, and it will include 20 residences of varying size. The apartment complex will be the first luxury multi-family home in the United States made from shipping containers.

Czech company KOMA MODULAR‘s newest design store, located near the town of Lüneburg, Germany provides storage, office and sales space all in one compact building. The building is made from recycled shipping containers, and it provides live/work space that is highly flexible and it can be moved or adapted to fit the user’s needs. Large windows in the showroom fill the room with natural light, and the second floor is offset, leaving enough space for a large terrace. The current owners is a young design engineer who focuses on interior furnishing.

The Farmery is a start-up in Raleigh, N.C. that is developing an urban farm and market built from shipping containers and standard greenhouse components. The bottom level serves as a market to sell the crops, and the entire structure is used to grow the crops. The structure uses the inside of the containers to grow mushrooms, and the walls of the containers are covered in growing panels to form living walls where herbs, strawberries, lettuces and greens are grown.

Golany Architects‘ rustic treehouse is an incredible construction built among mature Jerusalem pine trees. When first checking out the site, the architects found that two of the trees had grown in the exact place where the house was to be located. But instead of cutting them down, they decided to integrate the two trees into the home. The pines not only lend to the aesthetic of the construction, but they also serve as a natural source of air-conditioning and shade the timber from the harsh sun. The house was constructed using a recycled shipping container, and prefab elements were applied wherever possible.

Last year’s FFA Orlando/AIA Florida Chapter architecture competition asked participants to design a new health care clinic for the homeless in the Paramore district of downtown Orlando, FL. Recent graduates Gretel and Lance Moore of Co-Tain rose to the challenge with this thoughtful design, which uses recycled shipping containers to construct a simple but effective, campus-like clinic. The proposal was unique from other entrants in that it was affordable and mobile – not to mention sustainable!

We’ve counted Adam Kalkin’s incredible shipping container renovations as some of our favorite projects over the past few years, and the artist/architect just unveiled his latest work – a pop-up pirate radio tower designed for the Mis-Design exhibition in Australia. The brightly painted tower turns a shipping container on its end, and it will stand at the entrance to the exhibition, which is hosted conjunction with the Ian Potter Museum of Art, Melbourne University, and State of Design Festival.

Asbury Park, NJ will become home to four awesome new pop-up shipping container shops this summer. Designed by Madison Marquette, the containers were salvaged from a shipyard and painted to fit in with the boardwalk‘s other bright and colorful stores. The versatile containers are 100% recycled and are sure to add to the Jersey Shore’s goals of becoming a low carbon footprint destination.

In a move that could be viewed by some as a regression to the late 1800s when convicts were shipped from England to Van Diemens Land (Australia), a local prison will next week begin a trial housing inmates within shipping containers converted into maximum security cells.  Taking just six months to build instead of the standard two years, each upcycled shipping container costs approximately AUD$70,000  representing a savings of almost $400,000. Political proponents espouse their virtues claiming they are safe, secure and cheap. Conversely, civil libertarians are not so enthusiastic, stating they are inhumane or not secure enough.  What are your thoughts? Is shipping container architecture appropriate for prisoners?
