<p>England’s <a href="http://www.londonarray.com" target="_blank">London Array</a> just placed its last wind turbine and switched online as the world’s largest <a href="http://inhabitat.com/denmark-now-25-percent-powered-by-offshore-wind-aims-to-double-capacity-by-2020/" target="_blank">wind farm</a>. Located in the Thames Estuary, the farm consists of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/construction-to-finally-begin-on-the-first-offshore-wind-farm-in-the-united-states/" target="_blank">175 turbines</a> that will power the area from Essex to Margate. Owned by <a href="http://www.dongenergy.com/en/Pages/index.aspx" target="_blank">Dong Energy</a>, <a href="http://www.masdar.ae/en/" target="_blank">Masdar</a> and <a href="http://www.eonenergy.com/" target="_blank">EON</a>, the 141 turbine (630 MW) phase one of the London Array is now fully functional.</p>

<p><a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/denmark">Denmark</a> has an impressive track record when it comes to the adoption of renewable energy, and the nation has been working quickly to develop its substantial <a href="http://inhabitat.com/denmark-announces-plans-to-produce-100-of-its-energy-needs-from-renewable-sources-by-2050/">offshore wind potential</a>. Last month, with the installation of their 36th 3.6 megawatt (MW) <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/siemens">Siemens</a> wind turbine, the nation reached an impressive <a href="http://www.forbes.com/sites/peterdetwiler/2013/03/26/denmark-1000-megawatts-of-offshore-wind-and-no-signs-of-slowing-down/">1 GW wind-power capacity</a> &#8211; enough to power 25 percent of the nation. Moreover, they aim to be 50 percent powered by wind farms within the next eight years, not simply through the installation of renewable energy infrastructure, but through a holistic adoption of <a href="http://inhabitat.com/copenhagen-is-on-track-to-achieve-carbon-neutrality-by-2025/">energy-efficient policies</a> and technologies.</p>

<p>This week, the US Army dedicated the world&#8217;s largest low-concentration <a href="http://inhabitat.com/solar-power">solar photovoltaic</a> installation on its <a href="http://www.wsmr.army.mil/Pages/Home.aspx" target="_blank">White Sands Missile Range</a> in New Mexico. The installation will generate 10 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity and reduce carbon emissions by 7400 tons each year while saving the institution around $930,000 a year. “This project illustrates the U.S. Army’s commitment to going green, our focus on operating on <a href="http://inhabitat.com/tag/net-zero-energy">net zero energy</a>, and doing what we can to help protect the environment,” boasts Garrison Commander Col. Leo Puller.</p>

<p><a href="http://news.usa.siemens.biz/press_releases">Wind turbine producer Siemens</a> has announced that it will reduce its US wind energy workforce by 38% due to adverse market conditions caused by the uncertain future of the wind energy tax credit,  price competition from <a href="inhabitat.com/tag/natural-gas">natural gas</a> and sluggish growth in electricity demand. The company said the cutbacks were necessary until market demand for turbines revives. Recent estimates suggest that while <a href="http://www.inhabitat.com/tag/wind-turbine/">US turbine installations</a> could reach 12GW this year, the figure could plunge to between 1.5GW and 3GW in 2013, as developers freeze projects depending on Congress&#8217; willingness to extend the federal production tax credit (PTC).</p>

<p>Overhead electric lines that power buses and streetcars are a common sight in California cities and towns, and they could soon be expanding to highways. At the 26th annual <a href="http://events.ntpshow.com/evs26/public/enter.aspx">Electric Vehicle Symposium</a> in Los Angeles last week, Siemens unveiled the &#8220;<a href="http://gizmodo.com/5910358/overhead-electric-lines-for-trucks-are-coming-to-california">eHighway of the Future</a>,&#8221; a system of electric lines that would be used to power specially-designed hybrid trucks. The eHighway is currently being tested in Germany, and pilot projects are planed for Los Angeles and Long Beach.</p>

The fleet is in dire need of a makeover, and BART has found just the designers to take on the challenge. <a href="http://www.designworksusa.com/">DesignworksUSA</a>, a design arm of BMW, recently signed a <b>$500,000</b> contract to upgrade BART&#8217;s outdated aesthetics.</p>

<p>Siemans just unveiled the world&#8217;s first true plug-in hybrid-electric <a href="http://inhabitat.com/index.php?s=airplane">airplane</a>, which has an engine that resembles the <a href="http://inhabitat.com/index.php?s=chevy+volt">Chevy Volt</a>&#8216;s. The airplane took its maiden flight on June 8 at the Wiener Neustadt airfield in Vienna, Austria and could reduce fuel consumption and emissions by 25% &#8212; that number is taken from statistics of the most fuel efficient aircraft available. This proven concept could do for the air what the Chevy Volt has done for the roads, and provide a nice segue from gasoline power to <a href="http://inhabitat.com/energy">electricity</a> by splicing the two technologies together.</p>

<p>Standby power is the bane of all electricity consumption. Essentially if there is a light coming out of a device, it is consuming power. It is such an important problem that the British Government is considering banning standby power altogether. As part of their green initiatives, Fujitsu Siemens has come up with a <a href="http://www.pcw.co.uk/personal-computer-world/news/2202970/computer-monitor-zeroFijutsu" target="_blank">new type of monitor</a> that uses zero standby power. Is this the solution?</p>

Norwegian energy group <a target="new" href="http://www.hydro.com/en/press_room/news/archive/2005_11/hywind_en.html">Norsk Hydro</a> is to place giant <a target="new" href="http://www.hydro.com/en/press_room/news/archive/2005_11/hywind_en.html">floating wind turbines</a> in the North Sea that will provide a reasonable, environmentally-friendly and economically feasible alternative to standard energy generation processes.<br />
