Researchers in Singapore have developed a new nanomaterial that functions like the best Swiss army knife in the world. The material, known as Multi-use Titanium Dioxide (TiO2), can produce energy, it can generate hydrogen, and it can even produce clean water. But that’s not all: The remarkable material can also be formed into flexible solar cells and it can double the lifespan of lithium-ion batteries. And with bacteria-killing properties, it can also be used in new antibacterial bandages.

Dr. Baile Zhang, an assistant physics professor at the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore has created a small, box-like “invisibility cloak” that uses optic crystals to bend light. International architecture and planning firm Hassell recently won multiple awards and commendations at the World Architecture Festival in Singapore. One of the projects recognized was Hassell’s Common Ground housing project in Camperdown, New South Wales, Australia. The original architectural finishes and details of this mid-century Singapore apartment were once hidden beneath decades of dust and grime – however it has now been sensitively restored to last another 50 or more years. Interior designer Eugene Yip recycled 100% of the original herringbone-design timber floor, white mosaic floor tiles, wrought-iron swing windows and grilles, metal gates, etc, and added carefully-considered new design elements to give the space a vintage-modern charm.

Situated in the heart of Singapore, Bishan Park is one of the city’s most popular green spaces. Once a utilitarian concrete channel, the site has been transformed into a naturalized river through a much-needed upgrade. This project is part of the Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Program, a long-term initiative to expand the country’s bodies of water into vibrant, new spaces for community bonding and recreation. Sixty-two hectares of park space has been tastefully redesigned to accommodate the dynamic processes of a river system while providing maximum benefit for park users. Three playgrounds, restaurants, a new lookout point constructed from the recycled walls of the old concrete channel, and plenty of open green spaces complement the ecologically restored river. This is a place to take your shoes off and get closer to water and nature!
