Renderings of a new soccer stadium for Cite Soleil, Port-au-Prince, Haiti have been released as part of the non-profit Project Phoenix’s philanthropic investment for the young people of the disaster-torn nation. With soccer considered a national pastime of Haiti, the construction of Phoenix Stadium will create greater opportunities for training, competition and employment available to everyone in the country. Designed by architect Carlos Zapata of CZS, the $5M Phoenix Stadium will be constructed over rubble from the 2010 earthquake, and will include an elementary and middle school, dormitories, an edible garden, a lake filled with fish, and a compost and recycling plan

While the excitement of the World Cup may be over, one group of creative thinkers still has soccer on the brain – and for a great cause. Jane Harrison and David Turnbull of Atopia Research have come up with PITCH: AFRICA, a soccer field (or pitch) that collects and filters water. Currently, almost one billion people on the Earth don’t have clean drinking water, and dirty water and a lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all disease and kill more people than all forms of violence. This ingenious invention is both a fun place for communities to gather and a way for them to access clean water.

This verdant soccer training facility in France shows its love for all things turf by expanding its pitch right onto its roof! The Centre de Formation de Football in Amiens consists of a facility and office space to support the athletes right alongside a field where the team practices. Designed by Chartier – Corbasson and finished in 2009, the facility is sure to inspire its athletes and maybe even provide for some interesting drills while playing on the roof.

The recently completed Empire Field Stadium in Vancouver is made with 22,000 recycled tires, amounting to 346,000 pounds of crumb rubber! The stadium, which will host the BC Lions football team (American football) and the Vancouver Whitecaps Soccer team, utilizes the crumb rubber under the artificial turf, which provides a number of benefits for the players and the environment.

Believe it or not, countries are already bidding to host the World Cup as far out as 2022, and Qatar has submitted their bid, which includes a slew of solar powered stadiums as well as significant upgrades to their public transportation network. Eleven countries submitted bids for the 21st and 22nd World Cup, and the Qatar bid, which we saw over at Designboom this morning, is the first ever from a Middle Eastern country. If they win the bid, Qatar would build three brand new green stadiums and update two existing ones in order to host the games.

According to a startling infographic made for EU Infrastructure and a report by the Norwegian Embassy, the carbon footprint of this year’s World Cup in South Africa will be a whopping 6 times that of the last competition that took place in Germany 4 years ago. Many factors come into play – construction, travel, energy efficiency and existing infrastructure. Read on to see how each one adds to the 2,753,251 tons of CO2 (the equivalent of yearly emissions of over a million cars) that the event is projected to generate, what steps are being taken to possibly offset some of the ungreenness and how some of what is contributing to the massive footprint could actually be a good thing for South Africa.

Although all of the new stadiums are gorgeous, so far we’ve been a little dissappointed with the lack of sustainable design — until now, that is. The Moses Mabhid Stadium in Durban features an array of eco-worthy design features and it doesn’t hurt that it’s pretty amazing looking — especially at night.

A bubbly new soccer and rugby stadium is popping up in Melbourne that will feature a highly engineered exterior structure combined with many sustainable features. Designed by Cox Architects, the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium is a marvel of architecture and engineering with it’s bubble-like facade inspired by Buckminster Fuller’s geodesic dome. Construction is fully underway, allowing a glimpse into how the cantilevered structure is being put together.

In honor of the World Cup, Freitag has come out with some colorful patriotic footballs (or soccer balls as we like to call them in the U.S.). Not only is this a way clever idea (good time to capitalize on nationalism), but the footballs are eco-friendly too. Like everything else Freitag does, they are made out of recycled truck tarpaulins and are 100% vegan. Go team Freitag!

One of the pioneering innovators in turning industrial refuse into functional gear is Freitag, the Swiss company launched by a pair of entrepreneurial bike-riding designers who decided that dirty old truck tarps would make ideal messenger bags. Frietag blew up quickly from its humble beginnings — it’s easy to love bags that are durable, waterproof, recycled, and one-of-a-kind. But in scaling up, Freitag’s never compromised their commitment to material reuse and local production (in Zurich).

But why stop there? Given their knack for putting a super-hip edge on recycling, they’ve now scaled up exponentially, with a concept retail space made from shipping containers. “Lovingly they were gutted, reinforced, piled up and secured. Zurich’s first bonsai-skyscraper.”
