Solar cars are rapidly becoming more and more efficient, but they’re going to have to step up their game in order to beat the Celeritas, a 275 lb vehicle that can travel 2,200 miles per gallon. The car, designed by a team from Purdue University, just won the urban division of the 2011 Shell EcoMarathon international competition, which was held this week in Houston.

A remote-controlled quadrocopter recently set a new world record by staying aloft for 12 hours using energy beamed up to it by lasers. Developed by LaserMotive, the quadrocopter has photovoltaic panels installed all along its belly, which absorb laser light to power the vehicle. The quadrocopter hovered at 30 feet for 12 hours, breaking LaserMotive’s previous record.

Griffith University in Australia recently secured funding for a $21 million dollar research facility that will be the country’s first zero-emission and self-powered building driven by solar-hydrogen energy. Designed by Australia’s Cox Architects, the Sir Samuel Griffith Building will support the school’s environmental program while serving as a prime example of zero-energy construction for the rest of the country.

After seven years in the making, the Solar Impulse made its first real flight this morning from an airbase in Switzerland. The solar-powered plane got up to 5,500 ft in altitude and performed test maneuvers in order to see if the plane handled as well as simulations predicted. Everything went perfectly for the first test flight and proved that the plane is capable of taking off and landing. With this important test flight behind them, the Solar Impulse team can push on towards gearing up for their solar powered around-the-world flight in 2012.

This stunning solar powered gateway will soon welcome visitors and residents to Abuja, Nigeria. Evoking the shape of the traditional Nigerian bow harp, the design connects the new Abuja Airport to the city proper on the opposite side of the freeway and comes complete with green roofs, a giant solar canopy and bricks made from the local laterite clay. Conceived by Ehrlich Architects, the design was recently crowned winner of an international competition to create a gateway for the capital city.

The hot hand-held gadget of choice may not be the iPhone for much longer – if this wearable and solar powered wrist phone comes to market, everyone on the streets may soon be sporting it. Inspired by photosynthesis, the Leaf is a wearable phone concept created by Seungkyn Woo and Junyi Heo. The flexible device incorporates solar cells into the front and is capable of rolling up into the form of a wristwatch so that users can wear it and keep it charged while they’re on the move.
